History

Stadtwerke Meerbusch GmbH was founded in 1995 as wbm Wirtschaftsbetriebe Meerbusch GmbH, a joint venture between the City of Meerbusch and Rheinische Energie AG (rhenag), a subsidiary of RWE and RheinEnergie. The company was established to take over local energy and water supply. In 1996, the City of Meerbusch purchased the electricity network in the eight Meerbusch districts from RWE for more than 60 million euros. To finance this, the city sold the network to a leasing company, which leased it back to the utility under a hire-purchase agreement. Stadtwerke Meerbusch then leased the network back to RWE Energy. The lease contract for the network expired in 2013, with a final payment of 3 million euros transferring ownership to the utility. Since the beginning of 2014, the utility has operated the distribution network in its own name. In 2007, RWE considered merging Stadtwerke Neuss with SWK Krefeld, potentially including Stadtwerke Meerbusch and Stadtwerke Willich, but the management of Stadtwerke Meerbusch and the City of Meerbusch were sceptical of such plans. Since 2008, Stadtwerke Meerbusch has cooperated closely with Stadtwerke Willich in grid operation and administration, energy billing, customer service and internal central tasks. In 2016, RWE transferred its indirect 40% stake in the utility to the newly founded Innogy SE. In December 2017, the company was renamed from Wirtschaftsbetriebe Meerbusch GmbH to Stadtwerke Meerbusch GmbH. On 1 January 2020, the City of Meerbusch acquired an additional 7.4% of shares from Innogy SE, increasing its majority stake. The utility continues to invest in renewable energy, including solar and wind power, and supports households with photovoltaics, heat pumps and electric mobility solutions.
