Overview

Stadtwerke Lengerich is the municipal energy utility of the town of Lengerich in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its origins trace back to 1901, when the "Gasanstalt zu Lengerich" was founded to provide coal gas for cooking and street lighting. Over the 20th century the company expanded into electricity, took over the local grid, and was renamed Stadtwerke Lengerich in 1960. Since 1977 it has operated as Stadtwerke Lengerich GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the town. Today the company supplies electricity to roughly 37,500 residents and natural gas to about 70,700 customers, employing around 130 people. Its service portfolio covers electricity and gas tariffs, metering, heating solutions, e-mobility, energy certificates, district heating concepts, and energy-sharing offerings. It also operates customer centers in Lengerich, Lienen, Hagen am Teutoburger Wald, and Brochterbeck. Beyond classic utility services, the group includes subsidiaries such as BWG (operating public swimming pools) and teutel GmbH, founded in 2014 to build and expand a fiber-optic broadband network in the region. The company positions itself as a modern, local energy service provider driving the transition to renewable energy and digital infrastructure.

History

The history of Stadtwerke Lengerich begins in 1901 with the founding of the "Gasanstalt zu Lengerich." The plant produced coal gas through carbonization, which brought significant progress to the local population: instead of cooking with coal or self-cut wood, residents could cook cleanly with gas. The spread of lighting gas also ended the era of dim petroleum lamps in many households. Gas supply started with 145 customers and 60 street lanterns. Within the first ten years, the number of gas customers doubled and the number of street lanterns rose to 100. In 1915, Lengerich was connected to the electricity grid of the energy supplier "NIKE," today known as RWE. In 1923, the Gasanstalt zu Lengerich took over the electricity grid from NIKE and was renamed "Städtisches Gas- und Elektrizitätswerk Lengerich." The workforce grew from five employees in production and administration to 33 by 1960. In the same year, the company was renamed "Stadtwerke Lengerich." A few years later, the utility switched from coal gas to the more environmentally friendly natural gas. Since 1977, the company has operated as the wholly owned subsidiary "Stadtwerke Lengerich GmbH." Today, around 130 employees supply approximately 37,500 residents with electricity and 70,700 with natural gas, along with energy-related services. The group has diversified beyond traditional supply: in 2014, the subsidiary teutel GmbH was founded to build and expand a fiber-optic network, laying the groundwork for modern communication and aiming to transform the region from a "copper republic" to a "gigabit oasis." The group also includes BWG, which operates public swimming pools. The company maintains customer centers in Lengerich, Lienen, Hagen am Teutoburger Wald, and Brochterbeck, and continues to invest in renewable energy, e-mobility, and smart metering.
