Overview
Stadtwerke Eilenburg GmbH (SE) is a regional energy utility based in the Saxon town of Eilenburg, Germany. It supplies electricity, natural gas and district heating to the town and several surrounding districts, and is also responsible for street lighting. The company is majority-owned by the town of Eilenburg (51%), with the remaining 49% held by WEMAG AG of Schwerin. The modern company was founded on 1 March 1996, following a decision by Eilenburg's town council on 24 July 1995 to re-establish a municipal utility. It began with a small team under managing director Reiner Nölling at the Uferstraße 13 site. Its first activity was operating the ECW power plant, which established the district heating business that continues today. In 1998 the company merged with Gasversorgung Eilenburg, moved to the historic gasworks site at Sydowstraße 1, and took over full electricity supply for the town and the districts of Hainichen and Wedelwitz. Today Stadtwerke Eilenburg operates its headquarters in the Sydowstraße, a combined heat and power plant on the former ECW site producing district heating for that area and some residential areas in Eilenburg-Ost, and a natural gas filling station. It publishes a free quarterly customer magazine, the Stadtwerkemagazin. The company traces its institutional roots to 1869, when documents record town gas production in Eilenburg, and through the municipal gas and electricity works first mentioned in 1927.
History
The institutional history of municipal energy supply in Eilenburg reaches back to the 19th century. In 1869 documents record the production of town gas in Eilenburg, presumably already at Sydowstraße. The gasworks was expanded in 1905 and again by 1910. In 1927 the 'Städt. Gas- und Elektrizitätswerke' (municipal gas and electricity works) were first mentioned. In 1928 the firm Aug. Klönne built a vertical chamber oven plant for gas production on behalf of the town. After the Second World War, the gas holder destroyed in the war was dismantled in 1945. In 1956 the works were transferred to state ownership in the GDR, and in 1964 Eilenburg was connected to the long-distance gas network, ending gas production at Sydowstraße. The modern Stadtwerke Eilenburg was established after German reunification. On 24 July 1995 Eilenburg's town council resolved to create a municipal utility again. Once electricity and gas supply and financing were secured, Stadtwerke Eilenburg GmbH was founded on 1 March 1996. Alongside managing director Reiner Nölling, eight employees began work at the 'Wärmepumpe' site at Uferstraße 13. On 1 April 1996 the company took over operation of the ECW power plant, founding the district heating division that still exists. On 1 August 1998 Stadtwerke Eilenburg merged with Gasversorgung Eilenburg, and on 5 June 1998 it moved into the historic gasworks premises at Sydowstraße 1. On 15 August 1998 supply by WESAG to Eilenburg and the districts of Hainichen and Wedelwitz ended, and the Stadtwerke welcomed its first private electricity customers. Two and a half years after founding, the company had taken over full electricity supply for the town. Today the company remains a regional utility. The town of Eilenburg holds 51% of the shares, and WEMAG AG Schwerin holds 49%. It supplies electricity, natural gas and district heating, and is responsible for street lighting in Eilenburg and the districts of Hainichen, Wedelwitz, Kospa, Pressen, Behlitz and Zschettgau. Besides its headquarters at Sydowstraße, it operates a combined heat and power plant on the former ECW site producing district heating for that area and some residential areas in Eilenburg-Ost, as well as a natural gas filling station. It has also used properties on Brunnerstraße and Kastanienallee (the former ECW service water works). A free customer magazine, the Stadtwerkemagazin, appears quarterly.
