Overview
Stadtwerke Delitzsch GmbH (SWD) is the municipal energy utility of Delitzsch, a town of about 25,000 inhabitants located north of Leipzig in the German state of Saxony. The company operates the local electricity, natural gas and district heating networks and supplies electricity, gas, heat and related services to households, businesses and industry in the Delitzsch area. It employs around 50 people and describes itself as the region's 'Stadtwerk' — a locally rooted, publicly influenced energy provider. The utility's roots reach back to the nineteenth century: a municipal gasworks was built in 1865, and electricity supply followed in 1906, when the town council signed a concession agreement with the Elektricitäts-Lieferungsgesellschaft Berlin. District heating was added in 1978. After various structural changes in the East German and post-reunification energy sector, Technische Werke Delitzsch GmbH was founded on 4 December 1991. It took over electricity supply for some 14,300 customers from Westsächsische Energie AG (WESAG) in 1995, and in 2014 merged with Gasversorgung Delitzsch GmbH and Delitzsch Netz GmbH, thereby taking on gas supply and the operation of the electricity, gas and heating networks. On 1 October 2015 the company was renamed Stadtwerke Delitzsch GmbH. SWD is owned by a consortium of municipal and regional energy shareholders: Wohnungsgesellschaft der Stadt Delitzsch mbH holds 51.2%, Gelsenwasser Stadtwerkedienstleistungs GmbH 30.5%, and Envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG 18.3%. The company generates climate-friendly electricity through combined heat and power (CHP) and photovoltaics, and it is a founding member of the Delitzscher Bürger-Energie eG, a citizens' energy cooperative that revives Delitzsch's historic cooperative tradition. The town itself is known as the birthplace of the cooperative idea and was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status for that heritage in 2016. In addition to its core network and supply business, Stadtwerke Delitzsch offers customer services such as online meter reading, advance payment adjustments and a network connection portal. It also engages with the local community, for example through the Stadtwerkelauf, a running event that drew participants again in 2026. The company positions itself as a modern, regionally anchored service provider pursuing excellence in its core business while embracing new energy developments.
History
The history of municipal energy supply in Delitzsch begins in 1865 with the construction of a municipal gasworks. Electricity followed in 1906, when the town council of Delitzsch and the Elektricitäts-Lieferungsgesellschaft Berlin signed a concession contract. In 1907 the first electricity was delivered to Delitzsch from the Elektricitätswerk Bitterfeld. Starting from the first lines and stations, the network was continuously expanded. From 1970, VEB Energiekombinat West took over electricity supply, and eight years later it began district heating for the first residential block in Delitzsch. After further structural changes in the Delitzsch energy supply, Technische Werke Delitzsch GmbH was founded on 4 December 1991, initially focusing on district heating. In 1995, TWD took over electricity supply for 14,300 customers from Westsächsische Energie AG (WESAG). In 2014, Gasversorgung Delitzsch GmbH and Delitzsch Netz GmbH were merged into TWD, giving it responsibility for gas supply and the operation of the electricity, gas and heating networks. The company was certified in 2012 as meeting the strict requirements of the Technical Safety Management (TSM) of the German Association for Gas and Water (DVGW). On 1 October 2015, the company was renamed Stadtwerke Delitzsch GmbH. Today, Stadtwerke Delitzsch operates as a municipal utility with around 50 employees. Its shareholders are Wohnungsgesellschaft der Stadt Delitzsch mbH (51.2%), Gelsenwasser Stadtwerkedienstleistungs GmbH (30.5%) and Envia Mitteldeutsche Energie AG (18.3%). The company generates climate-friendly electricity through combined heat and power and photovoltaics, and it is a founding member of the Delitzscher Bürger-Energie eG citizens' energy cooperative. It serves the Delitzsch region, an area that has transformed from lignite mining to a center of renewable energy and hosts major industrial investments such as Porsche, BMW and DHL in northern Leipzig.
