Overview
Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz is the municipal utility company of the town of Annaberg-Buchholz in the Erzgebirgskreis district of Saxony, Germany. It was re-founded on 1 April 1992 as a municipal enterprise (Eigenbetrieb) of the town, reviving a utility that had first been established in 1924. In 2000 the municipal enterprise was converted into Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz GmbH, and in 2001 the subsidiary Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz Energie AG was spun off. The company is wholly owned by the Große Kreisstadt Annaberg-Buchholz. The utility supplies electricity, natural gas and district heating to tens of thousands of households and businesses in the Erzgebirge region. It operates the electricity and gas distribution networks in Annaberg-Buchholz and, through concession agreements concluded from 2009 onward, in several surrounding municipalities including Königswalde, Thermalbad Wiesenbad, Schlettau, Tannenberg, Jöhstadt and Bärenstein. It also provides broadband internet access, operates street lighting on behalf of various towns and municipalities, and offers building services such as metering, heating-cost billing and legionella testing for property managers and owners. Beyond energy, the company runs several public leisure facilities: the Atlantis indoor swimming pool and the "Am Stangewald" outdoor pool in Annaberg-Buchholz, two multi-storey car parks, an underground garage and other parking facilities. It also owns a holiday apartment house in Heringsdorf on the Baltic island of Usedom. The company has six branch offices outside its headquarters and opened service branches in Thum, Zschopau, Chemnitz, Zwönitz, Flöha, Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Kirchberg between 2009 and 2013. Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz sees itself as a reliable partner for the region, committed to public service, basic supply and local value creation. It supports social and cultural projects and encourages employee volunteering. Its headquarters have been at the Stadtwerkehaus in Robert-Schumann-Straße since 18 March 2002. The company holds a small stake in Verbundnetz Gas AG Leipzig through the VNG Verbundnetz Gas Verwaltungs- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft.
History
The Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz were first founded in 1924. On 1 April 1992 they were re-established as a municipal enterprise (Eigenbetrieb) of the town of Annaberg-Buchholz. Initially the company operated only the district heating supply and the two indoor swimming pools, the "Schwimmhalle Atlantis" and the "Stadtbad" in Annaberg-Buchholz. In 1992 the town of Annaberg-Buchholz, together with other municipalities, sued for the return of the old electricity and gas assets that had been taken from it after the Second World War. Following negotiations with the regional suppliers Energieversorgung Südsachsen AG Chemnitz (electricity) and Erdgas Südsachsen GmbH, the Stadtwerke took over the electricity and gas networks within the town area in 1995. In 1998 the company took over the technical operation of street lighting in the town of Annaberg-Buchholz. In 2000 the municipal enterprise was converted into Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz GmbH, and in 2001 the Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz Energie AG was spun off. In 2001/2002 the Stadtwerke took over the technical operation of the "Markt" underground garage and the "Altstadt" multi-storey car park. Since 18 March 2002 the Stadtwerkehaus at Robert-Schumann-Straße has been the company headquarters. In 2003 the subsidiaries S + F Sport und Freizeit Annaberg GmbH and MUB Management und Beratungs GmbH were founded. A holiday property in Heringsdorf on Usedom was acquired in 2005. Broadband internet connections were established in Mildenau in 2007, followed by the spa town of Oberwiesenthal. Since 2013 such connections have been available in Schönfeld, Wiesa, Hammerunterwiesenthal and the Bärenstein district of Kühberg. In 2009 the Stadtwerke commissioned a modern combined heat and power (CHP) plant in the Annaberg-Buchholz heating power station, which generates a large part of the electricity consumed in Annaberg-Buchholz itself. From 2009 onward, concession agreements for electricity distribution networks were concluded with the municipalities of Königswalde, Thermalbad Wiesenbad, Schlettau, Tannenberg, Jöhstadt and Bärenstein, as well as with the town of Annaberg-Buchholz for the incorporated districts of Cunersdorf, Frohnau and Geyersdorf, the commercial area on the B 101 and the Adam Ries residential area. Gas concession agreements were concluded with Königswalde and Schlettau and with the town of Annaberg-Buchholz for the districts of Cunersdorf, Frohnau and Geyersdorf and the commercial area on the B 101. The electricity networks mentioned have been operated since 1 January 2012, and the gas networks since 1 January 2013 (Königswalde and the Annaberg-Buchholz districts of Cunersdorf, Frohnau and Geyersdorf) and 1 January 2015 (Schlettau and the commercial area on the B 101), in addition to the electricity and gas distribution networks already operated in Annaberg-Buchholz. The sales department opened service branches in Thum, Zschopau, Chemnitz (2), Zwönitz, Flöha, Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Kirchberg between 2009 and 2013. In 2014 the Stadtwerke took over the technical operation of the "Altstadt 2" multi-storey car park. In 2017 MUB Management und Beratungs GmbH was merged into Stadtwerke Annaberg-Buchholz GmbH. In 2026 the previously wholly owned subsidiary S + F Sport und Freizeit Annaberg GmbH was also merged into the parent company.
