Overview
Stadtwerke Aalen is the municipal utility company of the city of Aalen in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. As a modern service provider with around 350 employees, it operates across twelve business divisions and supplies residents with electricity, natural gas, heat and drinking water, while wastewater disposal is handled through its own municipal operation. Beyond energy and water, the company runs several multi-storey car parks, underground garages and parking areas in the city, as well as the Limes-Thermen Aalen spa, the municipal indoor swimming pool and the Spiesel and Unterrombach outdoor pools. It is a regionally rooted company that supports numerous clubs and cultural and sporting events, contributing to quality of life in Aalen and the surrounding region. The company traces its origins to 1867, when the city of Aalen was lit with town gas. Central water supply followed in 1871, and electricity supply began in 1912. Over the decades it expanded into heat supply, took over electricity supply for Unterkochen in 1995, and assumed responsibility for the previously municipal outdoor pools in 1996. In 1997 wastewater disposal and car parks were transferred from the city to the Stadtwerke, and in 2001 the Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH was formally established. Today it markets 100% green electricity and gas to private and business customers in Aalen, the Ostalbkreis and the wider region. Stadtwerke Aalen is wholly owned by the City of Aalen and operates as a municipal enterprise. In September 2026 the company changed its legal form from Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH to Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH & Co. KG. Its portfolio spans energy supply, water and wastewater, heat, swimming pools and spas, parking, and related services such as customer cards, discount promotions, an events system, a customer magazine and a newsletter.
History
The history of Stadtwerke Aalen begins in 1867, when the city of Aalen was illuminated with town gas. In 1871 the central water supply was established, replacing the earlier reliance on natural water sources such as springs and free-standing wells. Electricity supply in Aalen started in 1912. In 1963 the Aalen municipal indoor swimming pool was built. In 1966 a liquid gas splitting plant replaced gas production from coal. The era of natural gas began in 1980, when natural gas replaced town gas and the company ceased its own town gas production. In 1982 the customer information centre of Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH was established. In 1992 the Limes-Thermen Aalen were assigned to the Stadtwerke as a leased operation by the city of Aalen, and the heat business division was developed. In 1995 the company took over electricity supply for Unterkochen from UJAG. In 1996 the previously municipal outdoor pools Hirschbach, Spiesel and Unterrombach (Bädle) were assigned to the Stadtwerke. In December 1997 the company moved into its new administrative building in the Hasennest, and the wastewater disposal and car park divisions were transferred from the city of Aalen to the Stadtwerke. On 1 January 2001, Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH was formally established. In September 2026 the company changed its legal form from Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH to Stadtwerke Aalen GmbH & Co. KG. Today the company employs around 350 people and operates in twelve business divisions, supplying electricity, natural gas, heat and drinking water, managing wastewater through its own municipal operation, and running parking facilities, the Limes-Thermen spa, the municipal indoor pool and the Spiesel and Unterrombach outdoor pools.
