Overview

Stadtpark Center Spittal is an inner-city shopping centre in Spittal an der Drau, a town in the Austrian federal state of Carinthia. It was built on the site of a former postal facility in the Bahnhofstraße and opened in April 2006 after roughly one year of construction. The centre is operated by HYPO Stadtpark Center Spittal GmbH, and construction costs amounted to approximately 30 million euros. The centre occupies a triangular plot framed by Spittal-Millstättersee railway station, the school centre (Schulzentrum) and the town park (Stadtpark). Its stated purpose was to curb the sprawl of retail development on the outskirts and redirect purchasing power back into the town centre. It was also intended to provide the Spittal an der Drau district with a shopping offer comparable to the new centres that had recently opened in Villach (Atrio) and Klagenfurt (City-Arkaden). The centre houses 40 shops and food-service businesses as well as a Cineplexx cinema. The ground floor (level E) and the first floor (level 1) contain most of the shops and all of the restaurants and cafés. The Cineplexx cinema, with four screens and capacity for up to 540 people, is located on level 1. The second floor (level 2) accommodates the centre management, a dental practice and office space. About 300 parking spaces are available in an underground garage; parking is free for customers for 1.5 hours and for cinema-goers for four hours. Events are held at the centre on an ongoing basis.

History

Stadtpark Center Spittal was developed on a former postal site in the Bahnhofstraße in Spittal an der Drau, Carinthia. Construction lasted nearly one year, and the shopping centre opened in April 2006. The project cost approximately 30 million euros. Its operator is HYPO Stadtpark Center Spittal GmbH. The centre was conceived with a clear urban-planning objective: to curb the "Geschäftewildwuchs" (uncontrolled retail sprawl) on the outskirts of town and to shift purchasing power back into the inner city. At the same time, following the opening of new shopping centres in Villach (Atrio) and Klagenfurt (City-Arkaden), the project was meant to create an appropriate competitive offering in the Spittal an der Drau district. The building occupies a triangular site bordered by Spittal-Millstättersee railway station, the Schulzentrum (school centre) and the Stadtpark (town park). It contains 40 shops and food-service businesses as well as a Cineplexx cinema. The ground floor (level E) and first floor (level 1) hold most of the shops and all of the gastronomy businesses; the Cineplexx cinema with four screens and capacity for up to 540 people is on level 1. Level 2 houses the centre management, a dental practice and office space. An underground garage provides around 300 parking spaces, free for customers for 1.5 hours and for cinema visitors for four hours. The centre hosts events on an ongoing basis.
