Overview

Stadshaven Brouwerij is a craft brewery and hospitality concept located in a restored 100-year-old fruit warehouse in the Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) area of Rotterdam-West, Netherlands. It opened in July 2021 as the fourth and largest location of the Amsterdam-based Bierfabriek group, which invested seven million euros in the project. The brewery is one of the largest independent craft breweries in the Netherlands, with an annual brewing capacity of 20,000 hectoliters and a stated production of nearly 2 million liters of craft beer per year. The facility includes a hypermodern brewhouse with four 4,000-liter brewing kettles and nineteen 12,000-liter lagering tanks, as well as a bottling line for bottles, cans, and kegs—the first such line within the Bierfabriek group, enabling distribution beyond the immediate region. The brewery combines production with a waterfront gastropub offering over 350 seats and a 750 m² terrace. The menu blends Dutch classics with Asian ingredients, and street-style dishes with gourmet options, aiming to pair a relaxed pub atmosphere with high-end restaurant service. The location in the former fruit port—once the world's largest fruit harbor—is part of Rotterdam's circular economy innovation district. Stadshaven Brouwerij produces a range of craft beers, including year-round and limited editions, often featuring fruit and citrus ingredients. Core beers include Octopus Blond (6% blond with kiwi and blood orange), Great White (5.3% witbier with grapefruit and orange), Piranha Tripel (8.5% tripel with kumquats and mango), Moray IPA (5.5% IPA with tangerine and carambola), Sailor's Lager (5% Italian pils with citrus jambhiri), and Devil's Fruit (3.8% fruit beer with cherry, raspberry, and blackcurrant). Limited editions include Bock Rammer (7.8% dark double bock with caramel notes) and Ice Breaker (8.5% winter ale with cinnamon and star anise). Low-alcohol versions of Octopus Blond and Moray IPA at 0.4% are also produced. The brewery has hosted events such as the SHIPPED Beer Festival in October 2022, organized with Kaapse Brouwers, featuring beers from the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, England, and Belgium. The brand emphasizes sustainability, claiming to make "the most sustainable beer in Rotterdam." It operates tours of its brewing process and facilities.

History

Stadshaven Brouwerij was established as part of the redevelopment of Rotterdam's Merwe-Vierhavens (M4H) area, a former fruit port. Around 2020, the municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority began transforming the vacant industrial and port area in Rotterdam-West into a mixed-use district with housing, businesses, and hospitality. A key element was the renovation in 2020 of two 100-year-old fruit warehouses on Galileistraat. One 5,000 m² warehouse was designated for a large brewery with a hospitality venue, in collaboration with the Amsterdam-based Bierfabriek, which invested seven million euros in the project. The Stadshaven Brouwerij became the fourth and largest location of the Bierfabriek group, following Amsterdam, Delft, and Almere. Unlike the other locations, which brewed only for their own venues, the Rotterdam site included a bottling line for bottles, cans, and kegs, allowing distribution beyond the region. The brewhouse was equipped with four 4,000-liter brewing kettles and nineteen 12,000-liter lagering tanks, targeting an annual production of 20,000 hectoliters. After several months of test brewing, official brewing of craft top-fermented beers began in February 2021. On 1 July 2021, the brewery launched six beers at the opening of its gastropub, which features over 350 seats and a 750 m² terrace. The brewery quickly positioned itself as one of the largest independent craft breweries in the Netherlands. On 15 October 2022, Stadshaven Brouwerij co-organized the SHIPPED Beer Festival with Rotterdam brewery Kaapse Brouwers, showcasing beers from the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, Estonia, England, and Belgium. The brewery continues to operate as a production facility and hospitality destination, emphasizing sustainability and innovation in its beers.
