Overview
Stöhrhaus is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club), owned and operated by its Sektion Berchtesgaden. It sits at 1,894 m above sea level on the Untersberg massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps, in the municipality of Bischofswiesen, Landkreis Berchtesgadener Land, Bavaria, Germany. The hut lies just below and about 470 m west of the Berchtesgadener Hochthron summit (1,972 m), within a protected FFH nature conservation area. Built between 1898 and 1901 and expanded several times since, Stöhrhaus is a popular day destination for hikers and an important base for mountaineers crossing the Untersberg plateau. It offers panoramic views of the Berchtesgaden mountains, including the Hochkalter, Watzmann, Steinernes Meer and Hoher Göll, and serves as a key waypoint on the Austrian long-distance Rupertiweg trail where it crosses German territory. Access routes include Hallthurm, Winkl, Aschau, Hintergern and Ettenberg, generally rated easy with walking times of three to four hours. The hut is also a base for climbing on the Untersberg south and east faces and for the Berchtesgadener Hochthron via ferrata. A major renovation took place in 2018/19, when the rear half of the building was demolished and rebuilt; further plans include a second dining room. Since summer 2024 the hut has been run by a new tenant, Florian, who describes himself as nature-loving, raised in the mountains and a passionate climber. The hut offers overnight accommodation (reservations by phone or email) and a panoramic terrace. Its official website is stoehrhaus.de.
History
Stöhrhaus was built between 1898 and 1901 on the Untersberg massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. It is a Schutzhütte (mountain hut) of the Deutscher Alpenverein, belonging to the DAV Sektion Berchtesgaden. Over the decades it was expanded several times to serve the growing number of hikers and mountaineers visiting the Untersberg. The hut sits at 1,894 m above sea level, just northwest of the Untersberg's highest point and about 470 m west of the Berchtesgadener Hochthron summit (1,972 m). It lies within the municipality of Bischofswiesen, Gemarkung Bischofswiesener Forst, high above the valleys around Bischofswiesen, Berchtesgaden and Marktschellenberg. The location is within a protected FFH nature conservation area. Stöhrhaus has long been a popular day destination for endurance hikers and an important base for mountaineers who wish to experience sunset on the mountain and, after an overnight stay, cross the entire Untersberg plateau. It is a key waypoint on the Rupertiweg, an Austrian long-distance trail that here runs on German territory. The hut offers wide views of the Hochkalter, Watzmann, Steinernes Meer and Hoher Göll, as well as the surrounding valleys. In winter it is a destination for ski tours from Winkl over the Reisenkaser and for plateau crossings. Access routes to the hut include Hallthurm (690 m) via Zehnkaser, Winkl (650 m) via Reisenkaser, Aschau (680 m) near Bischofswiesen via Stöhrweg and Leiterl, Hintergern (800 m) near Berchtesgaden via Stöhrweg and Leiterl, and Ettenberg (790 m) near Marktschellenberg via Scheibenkaser and Leiterl. All are rated easy, with walking times of about three to four hours. Transitions to other huts include the Toni-Lenz-Hütte (1,438 m) via the plateau, Mittagscharte, Thomas-Eder-Steig and Schellenberger Eishöhle (medium, 3 hours) and the Zeppezauerhaus (1,663 m) via the plateau, Mittagscharte and Salzburger Hochthron (1,852 m) (medium, 3.5 hours). Nearby summit climbs include the Berchtesgadener Hochthron (1,972 m, easy, 15 minutes), Gamsalpkopf (1,885 m, easy, 30 minutes) and Salzburger Hochthron (1,852 m, medium, 3 hours). In 2018/19 a comprehensive renovation took place, in which the rear half of the building was demolished and rebuilt. Plans for the following years include constructing a second dining room (Gaststube). In recent years the hut has been extensively renovated and modernized. Since summer 2024, Florian has been the new tenant (Wirt) at Stöhrhaus; he describes himself as deeply connected to nature, raised in the mountains and a passionate climber, and welcomes guests with his team. The hut offers overnight accommodation, with reservations available by phone (+49 (0)8652 7233) or email (info@stoehrhaus.de), and a panoramic terrace with views of the Berchtesgaden mountains. The area also offers numerous climbing routes on the Untersberg south and east faces, mostly at higher difficulty grades, with the Berchtesgadener Hochthron via ferrata being a major attraction.
