Overview

SRM Economic Research Center (SRM Centro Studi e Ricerche), also known as Associazione studi e ricerche per il Mezzogiorno, is an Italian research center founded in 2003 in Naples. It is linked to the Intesa Sanpaolo Group and supported by the Compagnia di San Paolo foundation. SRM inherited the know-how of the Banco di Napoli's research office, established in 1931, and has since developed a strong focus on the economic dynamics of Southern Italy (Mezzogiorno) within a Euro-Mediterranean vision. SRM conducts research on three main areas: economic and social scenarios, interdependence and internationalization of territories, with a focus on "Imprese & Mezzogiorno"; the maritime economy, particularly port infrastructure, shipping, and logistics; and "Energy & Med", covering energy sector developments and sustainability challenges. The center publishes monographic studies, periodic reports, and journals, including the international journal Rassegna Economica (founded in 1931 by Banco di Napoli and managed by SRM since 2004), the bimonthly Dossier Unione Europea (since 1993), and the Quaderni di Economia Sociale (since 2016). SRM has established two permanent observatories: one on the Maritime Economy (since 2014) and one on economic relations with the Mediterranean. It also produces the annual "Italian Maritime Economy" report and collaborates with institutions such as Confindustria, IRES, IRPET, and others. The center is headquartered in Naples and operates with a Euro-Mediterranean outlook, serving as a bridge between Europe and the Southern Mediterranean. SRM's governance includes a President, currently Paolo Scudieri, and a General Manager, Massimo Deandreis. Its founding members include four banks of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, the Istituto Banco di Napoli - Fondazione, and the Compagnia di San Paolo. The center is active in organizing events, publishing research, and participating in international partnerships such as the Global Shipping Think Tank Alliance, signed in Shanghai in 2016.

History

SRM was founded in 2003 in Naples as a research center aimed at improving knowledge of Southern Italy's infrastructure, production, and social fabric, and contributing to the development of the Mezzogiorno within a European and Mediterranean vision. It inherited the consolidated know-how of the Banco di Napoli's research office, which was established in 1931. The founding members were four banks of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group, the Istituto Banco di Napoli - Fondazione, and the Compagnia di San Paolo. Since its inception, SRM has conducted extensive research on sectors and supply chains of the Italian production system, including automotive, aeronautics, aerospace, agri-food, pharmaceuticals, textiles, tourism, water, renewable energy, and more. It publishes monographic studies, periodic reports, and journals. Among its periodic reports are the semiannual "Check up Mezzogiorno" with Confindustria, the "La Finanza Territoriale in Italia" report with IRES, IRPET, Eupolis Lombardia, IPRES, and Liguria Ricerche, and a report on the international openness of Italian regions with Intesa Sanpaolo's Research Department. SRM also publishes the Osservatorio Giovani Imprenditori and the Bollettino Mezzogiorno. SRM manages three journals: since 2004, the international journal Rassegna Economica, founded in 1931 by Banco di Napoli; since 1993, the bimonthly Dossier Unione Europea, which monitors European policies and their impact on the Mezzogiorno; and since 2016, the Quaderni di Economia Sociale, a semiannual journal on nonprofit and social solidarity, produced with Fondazione con il Sud and Banca Prossima (Intesa Sanpaolo Group), which began as a periodic report in 2012. In 2014, SRM created the permanent Observatory on Maritime Economy, a project dedicated to studying maritime transport, logistics, and ports in Italy and the Mezzogiorno. The observatory includes a dedicated website (www.srm-maritimeconomy.com) and publishes the annual "Italian Maritime Economy" report, which features international contributions. SRM also established an observatory on economic relations with the Mediterranean. On December 13, 2016, SRM signed the Cooperation Agreement "Global Shipping Think Tank Alliance" in Shanghai, promoted by the Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI), becoming the only Italian research center and one of three European partners in the initiative, alongside institutes from China, Japan, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, and the United Kingdom. SRM is headquartered in Naples and operates with a Euro-Mediterranean vision. Its governance includes a President, currently Paolo Scudieri, and a General Manager, Massimo Deandreis. The center continues to produce research, organize events, and collaborate with a wide network of associations, companies, institutions, and research bodies.
