The United States operating company and New York presence of Springer Nature, an international academic publishing group.
Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Springer Nature America is the United States entity and New York-based presence associated with Springer Nature, the international academic publishing group formed in 2015 through the combination of Springer Science+Business Media with Holtzbrinck Publishing Group's Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan, and Macmillan Education interests. The American operation represents a portfolio whose principal activities are scholarly publishing, research communication, academic books, journals, databases, and related digital services. The subject's corporate heritage is much older than the Springer Nature name. Springer-Verlag was established in Berlin in 1842 by Julius Springer and became one of the major scientific and technical publishers in Europe. Nature magazine began publication in 1869 and developed into the Nature publishing portfolio. Macmillan's publishing history reaches back to the nineteenth century, while Palgrave became a significant academic and professional publishing imprint. These strands were brought together in the modern group through a transaction announced in January 2015 and completed in May of that year. Holtzbrinck held the majority stake after completion, while Springer Science+Business Media was owned by BC Partners. Springer Nature America operates within the group's broad international publishing model rather than functioning solely as a conventional trade publisher. Its relevant activities include publishing peer-reviewed scientific, technical, medical, social-science, and humanities journals; distributing academic monographs and textbooks; providing research databases and discovery tools; supporting open-access publication; and publishing conference proceedings. Its American market presence is particularly important because the United States is a major source of research authors, institutional subscriptions, society relationships, advertisers, and journal readership. The group's best-known publishing identities include Nature and the wider Nature Portfolio, Springer, BioMed Central, Palgrave Macmillan, and SpringerLink-related products and services. Nature Portfolio has expanded beyond the flagship Nature journal into specialist titles addressing fields such as climate science, energy, sustainability, food, human behaviour, water, and cities. Springer and BioMed Central extend the portfolio across established subscription journals, open-access journals, books, reference works, and proceedings. The group has also used acquisitions, including the 2021 purchase of Atlantis Press, to broaden its scientific and technical conference and open-access publishing activities. Springer Nature has pursued digital distribution, open-access models, research-integrity systems, and sustainability initiatives. The group has described itself as carbon neutral from 2020 and has organized parts of its content and publishing activity around the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It is also a signatory to the SDG Publishers Compact. At the same time, the company has faced recurring scrutiny over editorial independence, peer-review failures, content access in China, research retractions, artificial-intelligence use in peer review, and the economic structure of scholarly publishing. The Springer Nature group attempted public listings in 2018 and again in 2020, but both efforts were abandoned in unfavorable market conditions. Leadership changed from Derk Haank to Daniel Ropers at the end of 2017 and then to Frank Vrancken Peeters in 2019. Springer Nature America remains active as part of the wider privately held Springer Nature organization, serving the United States market while participating in the group's global academic-publishing operations.
History
Springer Nature America belongs to the corporate structure created when Springer Science+Business Media was combined with several Holtzbrinck publishing assets in 2015. Its historical foundations therefore include multiple publishing traditions rather than a single founder or launch event. Julius Springer established Springer-Verlag in Berlin in 1842, creating the foundation of what became a major scientific, technical, and medical publishing business. Nature began in 1869 and later developed into an influential family of scientific journals. Macmillan's publishing history dates to 1843, and Palgrave became associated with academic and professional books. In the decades before the merger, Springer expanded its scientific and professional portfolio, while Nature Publishing Group built a globally recognized journal franchise around Nature and related specialist titles. BioMed Central added an important open-access component to the combined business. Holtzbrinck's ownership of Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan, and Macmillan Education placed these assets alongside Springer Science+Business Media, which was owned by BC Partners. The merger plan was announced on 15 January 2015 and completed in May 2015. Holtzbrinck retained a majority share of approximately 53 percent. The resulting company adopted the Springer Nature name and combined journals, books, digital platforms, databases, and educational and professional content. The United States operation, based in New York, became part of this international structure and supported the group's relationships with American researchers, universities, libraries, societies, and institutions. Derk Haank, previously associated with Springer Science+Business Media, became the first chief executive of the combined group. He retired at the end of 2017 and was succeeded by Daniel Ropers, who served until 2019. Frank Vrancken Peeters then became chief executive. The group explored public-market access through an attempted initial public offering in 2018 and another effort in 2020, but neither proceeded because market conditions were considered unfavorable. Springer Nature continued to develop its digital and open-access businesses. In 2021 it acquired Atlantis Press, a publisher founded in Paris in 2006 that focused on scientific, technical, and medical content and conference proceedings. The group also expanded the Nature Portfolio with thematic journals addressing climate change, energy, sustainability, food, human behaviour, water, and cities. It reported sustainability initiatives including carbon neutrality from 2020, alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and participation in the SDG Publishers Compact. The company's history has also included repeated challenges to publishing governance. Articles and papers have been removed or retracted over concerns involving access restrictions, editorial influence, inadequate peer review, questionable manuscripts, and research integrity. These episodes reflect wider tensions in academic publishing between commercial relationships, national regulation, institutional partnerships, editorial independence, open access, and the need for reliable quality-control systems. Springer Nature America continues to operate as the United States presence of an active, privately held global academic publisher.
