Overview
Sportfive, stylized as SPORTFIVE, is an international sports marketing and media-rights agency headquartered in Hamburg, Germany. Its work spans sports consulting, commercial strategy, sponsorship sales, partnership activation, media-rights distribution, hospitality, athlete representation, digital marketing and event-related services. The company operates across more than 30 sports, including association football, American football, basketball, baseball, handball, golf, motorsport, rugby, cycling, winter sports, esports and gaming. The business traces its roots to the sports-rights activities of UFA. In 1987, UFA secured broadcast rights for German Bundesliga matches and the Wimbledon Championships, establishing the foundation for a sports-rights marketing operation that later became UFA Sports. Sportfive was created in 2001 when Canal+ and RTL Group combined their respective sports agencies, Sport+ and UFA Sports, following the acquisition of joint control of Groupe Jean-Claude Darmon. The new company quickly became active in football rights, sponsorship sales and naming-rights transactions. One early example was the brokerage of the naming agreement that changed Hamburger SV's Volksparkstadion into the AOL Arena. During the 2000s, Sportfive expanded through acquisitions and major international assignments. It acquired the Munich-based agency ISPR in 2003, strengthening its position in the international marketing of Bundesliga rights. In 2004, ownership passed to Advent International in a transaction that included a new corporate structure with RTL Group retaining a minority interest. Lagardère acquired Sportfive in 2006 for an estimated €865 million and subsequently broadened its international platform. In 2008, Lagardère Sports acquired approximately 70% of World Sport Group, an Asian sports-marketing, event-management and media business with interests in golf, football and cricket. Sportfive and its predecessor businesses handled a wide range of event and rights assignments. These included marketing work connected with the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup hospitality programme in continental Europe, the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and Olympic media-rights assignments for the 2012 and 2016 Summer Games and the 2014 Winter Games. The company also worked with clubs, leagues, federations, athletes and brands, and was involved in stadium advertising, jersey sponsorship, hospitality and broadcast distribution. In 2015, Sportfive became part of a consolidated Lagardère sports business. Sportfive, World Sport Group, IEC in Sports, Sports Marketing and Management and Lagardère Unlimited were integrated into Lagardère Sports and Entertainment and operated under the Lagardère Sports name. After H.I.G. Europe, a subsidiary of H.I.G. Capital, acquired a 75.1% stake in the business in April 2020 and the remaining shares in July 2021, the company was rebranded Sportfive in May 2020. The rebrand accompanied a restructuring of its international leadership and a renewed focus on integrated sports and entertainment services. Since the rebrand, Sportfive has expanded its esports, gaming, creator, digital and pop-culture activities. It established an esports division, worked with organizations including Gen.G, Ampverse and Fnatic, and launched the SQVAD creator collective in 2022. SQVAD brought together activities in esports, gaming, fashion, music and event management, including the agencies Event Knowledge Services, Brave and Build a Rocket. Sportfive also acquired Wolfe Solutions in 2022, broadening its U.S. brand-marketing presence, and formed the Dravt joint venture with Dojo in 2023 to develop pop-culture opportunities in sports. The company continues to serve rights holders, clubs, leagues, federations, athletes and commercial brands. Its assignments include international club marketing, sponsorship acquisition, stadium and venue naming rights, media-rights strategy, digita…
History
Sportfive developed from UFA's early sports-rights activities. In 1987, UFA obtained broadcast rights for Bundesliga matches and Wimbledon, creating the basis for a dedicated sports-rights marketing business later known as UFA Sports. In 2001, Canal+ and RTL Group combined Sport+ and UFA Sports after the European Commission cleared their joint control of Groupe Jean-Claude Darmon. The resulting company was named Sportfive and became active in rights marketing, sponsorship, football representation and venue commercialization. One of the company's early specialties was naming-rights sponsorship. From 2001 it supported clubs and commercial partners in developing stadium-naming transactions, including the agreement that renamed Hamburger SV's Volksparkstadion the AOL Arena. Sportfive also became marketing agent for Arminia Bielefeld and Atalanta BC in 2001. Its acquisition of ISPR in 2003 expanded its ability to market Bundesliga rights outside Germany. Ownership changed several times during the following decade. RTL Group and Canal+ sold their interests to Advent International in 2004, while a restructured company restored RTL Group to a minority position. Lagardère acquired Sportfive in November 2006 in a transaction reported at approximately €865 million. Lagardère subsequently expanded its international sports platform, including the 2008 acquisition of about 70% of World Sport Group, which had operations in Asian golf, football, cricket, media and events. Sportfive handled or supported numerous major event assignments. In 2005, the City of Hamburg commissioned it to coordinate city marketing connected with the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The company later marketed television rights associated with UEFA Euro 2008, organized the continental-European hospitality programme for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, marketed the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin and acted as an IOC media-rights agent for the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2014 Winter Olympics. It also organized international club fixtures, including a 2012 friendly between Dinamo Bucharest and Barcelona, and participated in the launch of Sportdigital with German handball, basketball and volleyball leagues. By the middle of the 2010s, the business had become part of a broader Lagardère sports organization. In 2015, Sportfive, World Sport Group, IEC in Sports, Sports Marketing and Management and Lagardère Unlimited were integrated into Lagardère Sports and Entertainment and renamed under the Lagardère Sports structure. The consolidation created a wider international network covering rights representation, sponsorship, events, athlete services and media. H.I.G. Europe acquired 75.1% of the business in April 2020 and the remaining shares in July 2021. In May 2020 the agency returned to the Sportfive name. The rebrand coincided with a new global leadership structure and a strategy emphasizing integrated commercial services. Sportfive also created an esports division in 2020 and acquired the German esports agency Build a Rocket in 2021. From 2022 onward, the company broadened its work in creator marketing, gaming, digital services and popular culture. It launched SQVAD, a creator collective incorporating Event Knowledge Services, Brave and Build a Rocket, and acquired Wolfe Solutions in the United States. Partnerships with Gen.G, Ampverse and Fnatic expanded its esports-commercial portfolio. In 2023, Sportfive added digital marketing assignments for Concacaf and CONMEBOL competitions, appointed Seamus O'Brien to lead its Asia-Pacific division and formed Dravt with Dojo. In 2024 it formed ProjectFive with Marc Kosicke for athlete and personality representation. The company continued geographic expansion into Italy and Switzerland during 2025.
