Overview

Spolek pro vojenská pietní místa (abbreviated Spolek pro VPM) is a Czech association founded on 4 June 2007. Until 2014 it was registered as an občanské sdružení (civic association). It is an independent, apolitical group of people interested in history who map military memorial sites and enter them into the association's website, www.vets.cz. Under the term military memorial sites, the association understands memorials, monuments, memorial plaques and similar monuments recalling those fallen and deceased in war conflicts, as well as events related to Czech military and war history. It also covers war graves, graves of soldiers, legionnaires and resistance fighters who died in peacetime, persons who died in concentration camps, executed persons, persons killed during air raids, and graves of partisans. It maps mainly the territory of the Czech Republic, but also abroad, where it focuses on places connected with Czechoslovak soldiers and victims of war conflicts. It is the largest non-state database of such monuments in the Czech Republic, and it suitably supplements the information in the Central Register of War Graves of the Ministry of Defence of the Czech Republic (CEVH MO ČR). At the beginning of 2025, the database contained more than 72,000 VPM (of which 59,456 in the Czech Republic, 10,941 in Slovakia and the rest abroad). New VPM are added to the website every day. The association organises seminars once a year and publishes a quarterly newsletter, Monument (freely downloadable on the website), in which it informs about its activities. It currently has just under thirty paying members and is open to anyone interested in similar activities. Information from the association's database is used, among others, on the Encyclopedia of the City of Brno and on the website of the Prague 7 Municipal District.

History

Spolek pro vojenská pietní místa was founded on 4 June 2007. Until 2014 it existed as an občanské sdružení (civic association), after which it became a spolek (association) under the Czech Civil Code. The association was created by people interested in history who wanted to map military memorial sites and make the information publicly available. Over the years it built up a database on its website www.vets.cz, which became the largest non-state database of such monuments in the Czech Republic. The database covers memorials, monuments, memorial plaques, war graves, graves of soldiers, legionnaires and resistance fighters, persons who died in concentration camps, executed persons, persons killed during air raids, and graves of partisans. It maps mainly the Czech Republic but also Slovakia and other countries, focusing on places connected with Czechoslovak soldiers and victims of war conflicts. By the beginning of 2025 the database contained more than 72,000 entries, with 59,456 in the Czech Republic, 10,941 in Slovakia and the rest abroad. The association organises annual seminars and publishes the quarterly newsletter Monument. It has just under thirty paying members and is open to new participants. Its data is used by other projects, including the Encyclopedia of the City of Brno and the website of the Prague 7 Municipal District.
