Overview

Spirit Rijeka (Udruga Spirit) is a non-profit, grassroots cultural organization based in Rijeka, Croatia. It was founded in 1997 by a dozen students who wanted a platform for subcultural and creative activities — concerts, fanzines, exhibitions, workshops, seminars, public debates and festivals — in the post-war ex-Yugoslav context where such youth culture infrastructure was scarce. The organization describes itself as a subcultural movement and has produced more than 350 projects and over 2,000 program days, with more than 100 active members over time and about 15 circulating in its headquarters. Spirit Rijeka is known for pioneering several cultural formats in its city and region, including Gitarijada and a festival of urban culture that created new contexts for musicians and graffiti writers. It has also built a strong record in inclusive work: cooperation across generations, a fully volunteer approach with people with disabilities, school workshops, activism for children's rights (including playground issues), and media-culture democratization for amateurs and enthusiasts. Its long-running international short film festival, Uhvati film (Catch the Film), focuses on inclusive short films from around the world and is held at HKD in Sušak, with free admission. The association has no employees and no fixed membership fee; members join by actively cooperating on programs, and the presidency is the executive factor while a board of project leaders manages ongoing work. The 2013/9 presidency listed Denis Pilepić, Helga Paškvan and Nazif Habibović. Spirit Rijeka does not represent any specific political option, religion or ethnicity. It has repurposed an old, worn-out factory hall for recycled cultural use, providing security for 'maladjusted' youth before specialized prevention and intervention organizations began to function. Its website, built with Jimdo Creator, publishes festival programs, booklets and volunteer video pages, and lists friends such as DRUMTIDAM.info.

History

Spirit Rijeka was born out of 12 young people (1996/7), mostly students, who wanted to organize sub-cultural activities in the post-war ex-Yugoslav context where fanzines, non-profit concerts by unaffirmed bands, exhibitions and similar youth culture activities were lacking, with some ecological and humanitarian notes. The organization was formally founded in 1997 by a dozen then-students who needed a platform to realize subcultural and creative programs through workshops, seminars, public debates, festivals, exhibitions, concerts and publications (newspapers, CDs). From the beginning until now, Spirit has had more than 350 projects — more than 2,000 program days — with over 100 active members over time, about 15 of them circulating in the headquarters. The organization was a pioneer in the city and region in many fields: Gitarijada, a festival of urban culture that created a new context for musicians and graffiti writers; cooperation with different generations; a complete volunteering approach with people with disabilities; school workshops; activism for children's rights (including a playground problem), partly supported by local neighborhood government. It produced the fanzine 'Spirit' three times, CD compilations for new youth bands, and free downloads. It put an old and worn-out factory hall into new, recycled use with recycled purpose, and a number of 'maladjusted' youth found security in that accommodation before some specialized prevention and intervention organizations began to function. It worked for a period in which young people were able to survive in those conditions without stronger help from donors — basically City institutions that did not completely recognize this structure. Twenty years after founding, Spirit still describes itself as a kind of subcultural movement, guided by Brecht's idea that 'Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.' The association has no employees and no fixed membership fee; a member can join after a few months of active cooperation on programs produced by permanent members, after which the team accepts the person and the person accepts the team. All active members help all programs when possible. The association does not represent a specific political option, religion, ethnicity or else; these remain personal matters and rights of members but stay outside 'at the front door'. As of 2013/9, the presidency consisted of Denis Pilepić, Helga Paškvan and Nazif Habibović; the presidency is the executive factor, while the association is managed by a board made of people who manage projects in progress. In the 2020s Spirit Rijeka continues to run its flagship Uhvati film international short film festival, focused on inclusive short films from around the world, held at HKD in Sušak with free admission and published booklets. It also partners in community heritage-and-film programs such as 'Između baštine i filma - Glasovi zajednice' with Teatar od soli and Bacači sjenki. Its website, built with Jimdo Creator, hosts festival programs, a volunteer video page and links to friends such as DRUMTIDAM.info. Wikidata describes the organization as engaged around democratization of media culture for amateurs and enthusiasts.
