Overview
Spirit of Discovery is a premium cruise ship operated by Saga Cruises, the British cruise business associated with Saga's travel and services group. The vessel was conceived as a major change in Saga's fleet strategy: before this project, the company had generally acquired second-hand ships, whereas Spirit of Discovery was Saga's first purpose-built new vessel. Constructed by Meyer Werft in Germany, the ship was delivered on 24 June 2019 and entered commercial service on 10 July 2019. The ship has a gross tonnage of approximately 58,250 GT, a length of 236 metres, and capacity for 999 passengers. Its relatively moderate size is central to its product proposition. Saga positioned the vessel as a small-ship-style alternative to the much larger ships common in the contemporary cruise market, emphasizing personal service, a high crew-to-passenger ratio, and a close relationship between guests and staff. The ship employs approximately 523 crew members and includes 100 cabins designed for solo travellers, supporting Saga's focus on older and independent British holidaymakers as well as couples. Spirit of Discovery expanded Saga's onboard offer compared with the company's previous vessels. The ship includes specialty restaurants, a theatre, fitness and wellness facilities, room service, and internet access. Saga's cruise proposition is structured around an all-inclusive format in which selected beverages, gratuities, specialty dining, room service, internet access, and local chauffeur services are included in the cruise price. This package-oriented model differentiates the ship from mass-market cruise products that often charge separately for many of these services. The ship's first season included voyages around the United Kingdom and Ireland, followed by itineraries in Northern Europe, Spain, and the Mediterranean. In January 2021, it undertook a South American circumnavigation, described at the time as its longest voyage to date. Its operational history has also included disruptions and maritime incidents. Shortly after delivery, the vessel made contact with bollards while departing Emden's Great Sea Lock; the ship sustained superficial damage while the lock infrastructure was more substantially damaged. In November 2023, severe weather in the Bay of Biscay caused injuries among passengers and led the ship to return to Portsmouth. Technically, Spirit of Discovery was designed with Siemens SISHIP SiPOD propulsion and power-distribution systems. Four nine-cylinder MAN 32/44 common-rail engines provide a combined output of approximately 21,600 kilowatts. The engines use selective catalytic reduction, and the vessel incorporates a centralized heating-water system intended to improve waste-heat recovery and reduce pumping requirements. The ship was also constructed to meet the Polar Code, supporting operation in relevant higher-latitude environments, although individual itineraries depend on operational and regulatory conditions. Spirit of Discovery forms part of a two-ship new-build program for Saga. Its sister ship, Spirit of Adventure, was delivered in 2020. Together, the vessels represent Saga's move toward a newer, standardized fleet while preserving the company's premium, British-oriented, relatively intimate cruising identity. Spirit of Discovery remains principally a ship and service platform rather than an independently incorporated consumer brand.
History
Saga Cruises ordered Spirit of Discovery from Meyer Werft in October 2015. The order was strategically important because Saga had traditionally relied on second-hand vessels, while this project represented its first new-build ship. The agreement also included an option for an identical sister ship, later realized as Spirit of Adventure. The ship's name was announced on 29 March 2017. Construction began with the cutting of the first steel at Meyer Werft on 1 March 2018. Her keel-laying and coin ceremonies took place on 28 June 2018, marking the formal beginning of assembly. Spirit of Discovery was floated out on 12 May 2019 and subsequently moved along the River Ems on 26 May for sea trials in the North Sea. Meyer Werft delivered the vessel to Saga on 24 June 2019. On the evening of the same day, while leaving Emden through the Great Sea Lock, the ship collided with bollards. The impact caused only superficial abrasions and scratches to the ship, although the lock's bollards sustained more serious damage. The vessel reached England on 28 June. On 5 July 2019, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, formally christened Spirit of Discovery at the Port of Dover. The event was notable because it was the first ship christening held at Dover in more than ten years. The ship began its maiden voyage on 10 July 2019, sailing around the United Kingdom with calls in Ireland. During its inaugural season, it operated routes in Northern Europe, Spain, and the Mediterranean. Its itinerary portfolio subsequently expanded beyond European waters. In January 2021, Spirit of Discovery completed a circumnavigation of South America, which was described as its longest voyage to that point. Spirit of Discovery was designed around Saga's premium, relatively intimate cruise model. At about 58,250 gross tonnes and 236 metres long, it is substantially smaller than many contemporary mega-ships. The vessel carries up to 999 passengers and has approximately 523 crew members, enabling Saga to emphasize service levels and guest familiarity. Its facilities include several specialty restaurants, a theatre, fitness and wellness areas, and a large allocation of solo cabins. The ship also supports an all-inclusive format covering selected drinks, gratuities, specialty dining, room service, internet access, and local chauffeur services. The propulsion and power systems were developed with Siemens using SISHIP SiPOD technology. Four MAN 32/44 nine-cylinder common-rail engines provide a combined output of approximately 21,600 kilowatts. Selective catalytic reduction is used for emissions treatment, while a centralized heating-water system supports waste-heat recovery and reduces pumping demand. The ship was built in accordance with the Polar Code. Spirit of Discovery's sister ship, Spirit of Adventure, was delivered in 2020. The two vessels became the largest ships in Saga's operating history, replacing older fleet units while retaining the company's emphasis on premium service and smaller-ship character. In November 2023, Spirit of Discovery encountered a severe storm in the Bay of Biscay. The weather led to passenger injuries and forced a return to Portsmouth, creating one of the most significant publicly reported operational disruptions in the ship's career.
