Overview
The Sortenerneuerungskonsortium Südtirol (SK Südtirol), known in English as the Variety Innovation Consortium South Tyrol, is a South Tyrolean (Alto Adige) fruit-industry body dedicated to the identification, evaluation and introduction of new apple varieties. It was established in 2002 by the two major South Tyrolean fruit grower associations, VOG and VI.P, as a structured response to the global search for apple varieties with strong market potential. Its work is carried out with scientific support from the Laimburg Research Centre, the South Tyrolean Extension Service and other partners, and it tests candidate varieties under South Tyrolean growing conditions before bringing market-ready selections into practice. SK's variety strategy focuses on market-relevant characteristics such as outstanding flavour, storage potential, sustainability and suitability for both integrated and organic cultivation. Over the years the consortium has been associated with the introduction and development of a series of internationally recognised apple brands, including Nicoter – Kanzi®, Scifresh – Jazz®, Scilate – Envy®, Ambrosia, Shinano Gold – yello®, Bonita, SQ 159 – Natyra®, CR Brisset – Joya® and R201 – Kissabel®. These introductions illustrate SK's role as a bridge between international breeding programmes and South Tyrolean orchards, and between growers and the consumer market. South Tyrolean fruit growing itself has a centuries-old tradition, with the first export links across the Passo del Brennero documented in the 18th century. The founding of the first fruit growers' cooperatives from 1893 onwards, and later the establishment of VOG (1945) and VI.P (1990), advanced the professionalisation of the sector. SK was a major milestone in that process, created to give the region a coordinated, science-backed pipeline of new varieties. Since March 2025, SK has been fully integrated into the new structure of alpoma, the Association of Producer Organisations formed by VOG, VI.P and VOG Products. Under alpoma, the successful work of SK is being continued and further developed into a shared platform for innovation and long-term sustainability. The consortium's legacy therefore lives on within alpoma's variety development activities, which pursue the same ambition: to identify, evaluate and successfully bring new, market-ready varieties into practice.
History
South Tyrolean fruit growing looks back on a centuries-old tradition, with the first export links across the Passo del Brennero already documented in the 18th century. The professionalisation of the sector advanced with the founding of the first fruit growers' cooperatives from 1893 onwards, and later with the establishment of the VOG (1945) and VI.P (1990) associations. A major milestone was the establishment of the Variety Innovation Consortium South Tyrol (SK) in 2002 by VOG and VI.P. Its aim was to identify new apple varieties worldwide with strong market potential and to test them in a structured way under South Tyrolean conditions, with scientific support from the Laimburg Research Centre, the South Tyrolean Extension Service and other partners. The variety strategy initiated by SK focused on market-relevant characteristics such as outstanding flavour, storage potential, sustainability and suitability for integrated and organic cultivation. Over the years, SK was associated with the introduction and development of a series of apple varieties and brands, including Nicoter – Kanzi®, Scifresh – Jazz®, Scilate – Envy®, Ambrosia, Shinano Gold – yello®, Bonita, SQ 159 – Natyra®, CR Brisset – Joya® and R201 – Kissabel®. In March 2025, SK was fully integrated into the new structure of alpoma, the Association of Producer Organisations formed by VOG, VI.P and VOG Products. Under alpoma, the successful work of SK is being continued and further developed into a shared platform for innovation and long-term sustainability. Variety development is being continued there with the same level of ambition: to identify, evaluate and successfully bring new, market-ready varieties into practice.
