Overview

Sorfert Algeria (Sorfert Algérie) is an Algerian chemical company specialized in the production of ammonia and urea, and one of the most important nitrogen fertilizer producers in North Africa. It was created in 2007 as a joint venture between Orascom Construction Industries (OCI), which holds 51% ownership, and the Algerian state-owned company Sonatrach, which holds 49%. The company's petrochemical complex was fully commissioned in 2014, following engineering, procurement and construction work attributed to OCI and Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (TKIS) for a reported investment of USD 1.6 billion. Since 2014, Sorfert has fully operated and managed the plant. The production complex comprises two ammonia units with a capacity of 2,200 tonnes per day each, and one granular urea unit with a capacity of 3,450 tonnes per day. Sorfert's main products are merchant ammonia and granular urea. Merchant ammonia is a transparent gas generated under elevated temperature and pressure by combining nitrogen (82%) and hydrogen, and is recognized for its highest energy density among non-hydrocarbon products. Granular urea is a solid fertilizer with a white crystalline structure and an approximate nitrogen content of 46%, formed under high pressure and temperature through the reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide. Sorfert is an export-focused company. It exports 95% of its urea production and 100% of its ammonia production. The company holds the European Chemical Agency REACH registration certificate, which makes the plant eligible for export sales in Europe, and it is a considerable provider of foreign currency into Algeria. As a local Algerian company, Sorfert is committed to supporting the economic, environmental and social well-being of Oran. During its construction, Sorfert employed more than 7,000 Algerians, contributing significantly to Oran's economy even before the plant commenced production. Today, Sorfert plays a key socio-economic role in Oran by being a large, full-time direct Algerian employer. Sorfert is an excellent illustration of a successful Algerian partnership between Sonatrach and an international investor, which successfully engineered, procured and commissioned a world-class plant in 2014. The company is headquartered in Oran, Algeria, and its top management includes Maged Eltobgy as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and Karam El Ahmed as Deputy General Director.
