Overview

Sophienhof is a shopping centre located at Sophienblatt 20 in Kiel, Germany, directly opposite the city's main railway station. It opened on 3 March 1988 and is one of the largest covered shopping centres in northern Germany. The centre itself covers nearly 38,000 m²; when combined with the directly connected Quer-Passage, Holstentörn and the Karstadt department store, the covered retail area reaches almost 70,000 m². The complex houses around 120 shops, numerous restaurants and food outlets, a food court designed as a street scene, a market hall, medical practices, pharmacies, a fitness studio, offices and 84 apartments. Anchor and chain stores include MediMax, H&M and many other fashion, shoe, book, stationery, accessory and jewellery retailers, alongside service providers. The centre is managed by ECE, as indicated by the accessibility contact email, and the current Center Manager is Justin Stoll. Sophienhof is well connected to public transport, with central bus stops between the centre and the main station, and the Kiel ZOB and ferry terminals nearby. It hosts regular events such as piano concerts, a Christmas market and the biannual 'Kiels längste Nacht' party. The centre emphasises family-friendly service, accessibility and a broad mix of retail, gastronomy and services.

History

The history of the Sophienhof site dates back to the mid-19th century, when the Kiel suburb gained importance after the construction of the Kiel-Altona railway in 1844. After the new Kiel Hauptbahnhof was built on the Sophienblatt in 1899, the area around the station was redeveloped. From 1902, the western two-storey tenement houses were demolished and replaced by large five-storey commercial and residential buildings. At the corner of Herzog-Friedrich-Straße and Sophienblatt, the Sophieneck was built in 1903, and the first Sophienhof also emerged in those years. Although the centre of Kiel was heavily destroyed in World War II, the Sophieneck, the Sophienhof and adjacent buildings survived. Nevertheless, in the course of restructuring Kiel's city centre according to the concept of the car-friendly city, it was decided to demolish the existing buildings and erect a shopping centre in their place. In 1980, the first apartments in the Sophienhof and adjacent buildings were occupied in protest against the impending demolition. The demolition work continued, and in July 1983 the Sophienhof was completely torn down. On the same site, the current Sophienhof shopping centre was ceremonially inaugurated on 3 March 1988. Since then, it has been expanded and connected with the Quer-Passage and Holstentörn, forming one of the largest covered shopping areas in northern Germany. The centre has hosted numerous events, including piano concerts, a Christmas market and the biannual 'Kiels längste Nacht' party. In 2005, one of the 84 apartments in the Sophienhof played a role in a notable event. Today, the centre is managed by ECE and continues to serve as a central retail and service hub in Kiel.
