Overview

Soosung Webtoon (수성웹툰) is a South Korean company whose history spans more than five decades and two very different business identities. It began in 1970 as Soosung Workshop (수성공작소), a small manufacturer of logistics and material-handling equipment. Over the following decades it grew into one of South Korea's representative makers of logistics machinery, including hand pallet trucks, electric carts, aerial work platforms, floor scrubbers and related industrial equipment. The company was listed on KOSDAQ in 2005 and built a nationwide dealer and after-sales network. In the 2010s and 2020s the company diversified. It developed autonomous forklifts and cooperative logistics transport robots, and it also entered the semiconductor parts business. A more dramatic shift came with the acquisition of a webtoon business. Its platform Toomics (투믹스) offers comics in about 11 languages and reports roughly 60 million cumulative global users. Toomics operates on a subscription model of about US$7 per month and accounts for the large majority of company revenue, most of it from overseas markets. Reflecting these changes, the company has repeatedly renamed itself: Soosung Industrial Transport Machinery (1977), Soosung Co., Ltd. (1991), Soosung Innovation (2021), EV Soosung (2022), Soosung Salvacion (December 2022), and finally Soosung Webtoon after a webtoon company acquired it in 2024. Today it presents itself as a diversified Korean company combining logistics equipment, semiconductor components and a global digital comics platform.

History

Soosung's history begins in 1970 with the founding of Soosung Workshop (수성공작소) in Bongrae-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul. In 1977 the business was renamed Soosung Industrial Transport Machinery (수성산업운반기계) and moved to Munrae-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu. In 1982 it was converted into a stock company under the name Soosung Industrial Transport Machinery Co., Ltd. (주식회사 수성산업 운반기계). Through the 1980s and 1990s the company built up its credentials as a logistics equipment maker. It was selected as a promising small business in 1985, completed a computer system linking 23 nationwide dealers online in 1994, and obtained ISO 9001 in 1997. In 1998 it won a bronze prize at the Korea Patent Technology Exhibition and earned the EM mark for quality machinery. In 2001 it established the Soosung Technology Research Institute and obtained CE marking for its aerial work platform series. In 2002 it was selected as an INNO-BIZ company. In 2005 the company was listed on KOSDAQ and received a presidential commendation for small and medium enterprises. It also obtained S-Mark safety certifications for several product series. In 2006 it gained S-Mark safety certification for MPS, SFE and SFH series. In 2008 it was designated a quality-recommended product by Incheon City, and in 2009 its aerial work platform received safety certification and a Good Design selection. In 2010 it registered a patent for an electric vehicle battery charging device. In 2011 it obtained CE marking for Korea's first ride-on electric wet floor scrubber (S860R). In 2012 it completed development of a street sweeper and began domestic and overseas sales, and was designated an export-promising small business. In 2013 it won the Three Million Dollar Export Tower award. In 2014 it was selected as a global procurement leading company under the P300 project. In 2018 the company developed the NARMA-III cooperative logistics transport robot, and in 2019 it developed an autonomous forklift. In 2021 it changed its name to Soosung Innovation (수성이노베이션). In 2022 it became EV Soosung (이브이수성), then Soosung Salvacion (수성샐바시온) in December 2022. In 2024 a webtoon company acquired it and the name was changed to Soosung Webtoon (수성웹툰). Alongside its logistics equipment business, the company operates the webtoon platform Toomics, which serves content in about 11 languages including English, Chinese and Japanese, with roughly 60 million cumulative global users. Toomics uses a subscription model of about US$7 per month and accounts for about 87% of total revenue, with more than 80% of that revenue coming from overseas. The company also continues to operate its logistics equipment and semiconductor parts businesses.
