Sony Entertainment, Inc. was a temporary umbrella division of Sony Corporation created to coordinate the company's major global entertainment operations. It operated from 2012 through 2019 and brought together businesses spanning filmed entertainment, television production and distribution, recorded music, and music publishing. The structure was centered on Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Music Entertainment, with Sony/ATV Music Publishing also associated with the group during the period. The umbrella was established as Sony sought closer coordination between its entertainment assets and its wider corporate operations. On March 30, 2012, Michael Lynton, then co-chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures Entertainment, was appointed chief executive of Sony Corporation of America, while Nicole Seligman became president of that company. Their responsibilities included oversight of Sony's global entertainment activities. Lynton was subsequently elevated to the presidency of Sony Entertainment in April 2013. Sony Entertainment was not a consumer-facing content label in the same way as Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Television, or Sony Music's individual labels. Instead, it functioned as a corporate management and reporting umbrella. Its businesses continued to operate through established subsidiaries and brands, including Sony Pictures Entertainment's film and television operations and Sony Music Entertainment's recording and publishing activities. The structure underwent leadership changes in the middle of the decade. Nicole Seligman announced her resignation in February 2016 after approximately fifteen years with the company and remained through March 31 of that year. Michael Lynton announced in January 2017 that he would leave his roles at Sony Entertainment and Sony Pictures to become chairman of Snap Inc. Sony Pictures chairman and chief executive Anthony Vinciquerra replaced him in May 2017. In late 2016, press reports suggested that Sony was considering a possible combination of Sony Pictures and Sony Interactive Entertainment. A Sony spokesperson rejected reports that a merger or comparable restructuring of the media divisions was planned. The reported proposal therefore did not become a documented reorganization of Sony's entertainment businesses. The umbrella effectively ended in 2019 when Sony Music Entertainment and Sony/ATV Music Publishing were consolidated under Sony Music Group. Sony Music Group was assigned as a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America alongside Sony Pictures, removing the need for Sony Entertainment as a separate overarching unit. In January 2017, Lynton announced that he would leave Sony Entertainment and Sony Pictures to become chairman of Snap Inc. Anthony Vinciquerra, who had been chairman and chief executive of Sony Pictures, replaced him in May 2017. During December 2016, reports circulated that Sony might restructure its American entertainment operations by combining Sony Pictures with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The reported arrangement would have placed Sony Pictures under the leadership of Sony Interactive Entertainment's then-chief executive Andrew House, although he was not expected to manage Sony Pictures' daily activities. Sony publicly rejected the suggestion that a merger or similar restructuring of its media divisions was planned, and the reported combination did not occur as described. The umbrella structure ended in 2019. Sony Music Entertainment and Sony/ATV Music Publishing were consolidated under Sony Music Group. Sony Music Group was organized as a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America alongside Sony Pictures, making Sony Entertainment unnecessary as a separate top-level entertainment division. Sony's entertainment businesses continued after the dissolution, but under separate operating companies and brand structures. Sony Interactive Entertainment and regional businesses such as Sony Music Entertainment Japan were also distinct from the former United States-based umbrella.
