History
Sono Motors was founded in January 2016 in Karben, Hesse, by Laurin Hahn, Jona Christians, and Navina Pernsteiner. Its initial proposition was to make electric mobility more practical and sustainable by integrating solar cells into a vehicle’s exterior panels. Rather than treating solar generation as a separate accessory, Sono designed the cells to be embedded in plastic body components, including the roof and sides. Electricity generated by the panels would be directed to the traction battery and supplement energy obtained through normal charging. The company raised early capital through crowdfunding. In 2016, one campaign on Indiegogo reportedly attracted 1,686 backers and raised approximately €549,995, while a Seedrs campaign raised approximately €1.8 million. Sono commissioned Roding Automobile GmbH to build two functional prototypes to its specifications. These vehicles were shown publicly in July 2017, after which the company conducted European presentation tours that included short test drives. The prototypes helped establish the Sion as the company’s central product and gave Sono a community-led route to collecting interest and reservations. Sono continued to seek capital and refine its production strategy. A further Seedrs financing round in 2018 exceeded €6 million, although manufacturing problems pushed the anticipated production start into the fourth quarter of 2019. By November 2018, the company was reported to have 8,586 pre-orders at an initially advertised price of €16,000 excluding the battery. In 2019, Sono presented a revised series design and announced NEVS as its intended manufacturing partner. The plan called for production at the former Saab site in Trollhättan, Sweden, with a large cumulative production target. Sono later reported approximately 10,000 paid reservations in May 2019 and around 13,000 reservations in January 2020. When conventional investment discussions did not produce acceptable terms, the founders returned to community financing. In late 2019 and early 2020, Sono sought support through new reservations, increased deposits from existing customers, donations, and proposed investment loans. The campaign ultimately reported approximately €53.3 million in pledges, although the company remained financially dependent on further funding and had not yet reached series production. By 2021, Sono had begun expanding its business beyond the Sion. It licensed its solar technology for commercial vehicles and worked with companies associated with utility vehicles, buses, and autonomous mobility. The technology proposition included embedded solar modules as well as electronics, telematics, data services, mechanical and electrical integration, retrofit products, and support. Sono also developed bidirectional charging capabilities intended to let a vehicle provide power to other vehicles or electrical equipment. The company’s financing pressures continued. In October 2021, Sono Group N.V., the Dutch parent company, filed for a Nasdaq offering and began trading on November 17. The reference material describes proceeds of approximately US$135 million. The listing temporarily provided additional capital, but the share price subsequently declined sharply. In 2022, Sono announced additional share sales and a facility allowing further share issuance, while operating expenses remained high relative to reported revenue. The Sion’s production plan changed again in 2022. Sono cancelled its arrangement with NEVS and selected Valmet Automotive as the intended manufacturing partner, with production planned in Finland. The proposed vehicle price had risen above €26,000 from the original €16,000 concept price. Sono unveiled the production design in July 2022 and reported more than 20,000 private reservations later that year, alongside business orders and collaborations. It also cited projects involving refrigerated transport, trailers, buses, and other commercial applications. In December 2022, Sono acknowledged that it had not raised enough money to complete the Sion’s production development. It launched the #savesion campaign, asking the community to fund additional fully paid reservations, increase existing deposits, or donate. The campaign targeted funding for pre-series vehicles and set a limited period for reaching its goal. The company warned that failure would lead to cancellation of the Sion and a shift toward solar technology and services. In February 2023, Sono ended the Sion program and announced that it would focus exclusively on its solar business. The company entered insolvency proceedings in 2023. The available reference material does not provide a reliable current ownership, leadership, or operating-status update after those proceedings.

Sustainable mobility and embedded solar-technology innovator
Battery-electric passenger vehicle
Sono Sion
The Sion was Sono Motors’ proposed first production vehicle. It combined a battery-electric drivetrain with solar modules embedded into exterior body panels on the roof and sides. The system was designed to supplement grid charging and potentially provide up to about 34 kilometres of additional range per day under suitable conditions, while the vehicle could also use Type 2 and CCS charging. Its planned features included bidirectional power delivery. Production plans were repeatedly delayed and changed between manufacturing partners before the program was cancelled in 2023.

Sono solar integration technology
Sono developed lightweight, embeddable solar modules and the associated electrical, electronic, and software systems needed to integrate them into vehicles. The technology was intended for buses, utility vehicles, trailers, refrigerated transport, and other commercial applications. Sono’s broader offering included engineering integration, power electronics, telematics, data services, retrofit kits, and customer support, enabling vehicle operators to use solar generation without adopting the cancelled Sion passenger car.
