History
Sonic Cathedral originated in October 2004 as a London club night established by Nathaniel Cramp, a former NME journalist. The inaugural event was held at The Legion on Old Street in East London. Its programme paired a DJ set by The Telescopes with a live appearance by The Radio Dept., signaling an interest in atmospheric, experimental, and independent guitar music rather than mainstream club programming. The project became a record label in 2006 after Sonic Cathedral offered to release a seven-inch single by Mark Gardener of Ride. Gardener’s connection to Ride placed the new label within the lineage of the original shoegaze movement. During its first years as a label, Sonic Cathedral concentrated largely on seven-inch records. Releases associated with this period included singles by School of Seven Bells, Maps, and M83. The label later gathered material from this singles-oriented phase on Cathedral Classics Volume 1, released in 2009. That same year marked a move into album publishing. Sonic Cathedral released the United Kingdom edition of Unknown Colors by Swedish band Sad Day For Puppets, its first album release. The expansion enabled the label to support longer-form projects while retaining its focus on shoegaze, dream pop, and alternative rock. Over time, the catalogue combined releases by emerging artists with solo and side projects from musicians whose earlier work had helped define independent guitar music. In 2013 Sonic Cathedral released Dean Wareham’s mini-album Emancipated Hearts. Wareham, associated with Galaxie 500, Luna, and Dean & Britta, returned to the label for a self-titled full-length album in 2014. The label’s live and community role was highlighted that year at its tenth-anniversary concert at Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen. On 18 May, a re-formed Slowdive made a surprise live appearance, connecting the label’s activities with one of shoegaze’s most influential bands. Sonic Cathedral continued to work with prominent musicians from the genre’s earlier generations in the 2020s. In October 2020 it released Andy Bell’s solo album The View From Halfway Down. Bell, a member of Ride, followed it with Flicker in 2022. In October 2023, Sonic Cathedral issued Pearlies, the debut solo album by Emma Anderson of Lush. These releases reinforced the label’s role as a bridge between the historical shoegaze scene and contemporary independent music distribution. The label also continued to introduce newer acts. In February 2024 it released Night-Bound Eyes Are Blind to the Day, the first full-length album by London band Whitelands. NME subsequently named it among the best debut albums of 2024 to that point. Sonic Cathedral’s twentieth-anniversary activities in 2024 consisted of four London concerts featuring artists such as Slowdive, Ride, and A Place to Bury Strangers. Across its history, the label has therefore operated through several connected activities: club-night curation, vinyl singles, album releases, compilations, artist-led projects, and live events. Its distinctive identity rests on specialist curation and sustained engagement with shoegaze and neighboring forms of alternative music.
