Overview

Sonic Belligeranza is an independent Italian record label dedicated to electronic music, founded in 2000 by DJ Balli in Bologna. It emerged from the breakcore scene, a genre that fuses 'black' rhythms such as drum and bass, hip-hop and ragga with 'white' noise-based sounds, power noise and experimental electronics. Over the years the label has become known for its uncompromising, anti-commercial aesthetic and for a roster of artists operating at the fringes of electronic music. In 2004, responding to the growing complexity of the genre, Sonic Belligeranza spawned two sub-labels: -Belligeranza, focused on a new form of turntablism, and +Belligeranza, dedicated to conceptual noise music. Artists associated with the label include FFF, ZombieFleshEater, N., Sandblasting, Kovert, Slaaam, Micropupazzo, Mat 64 & Pira 666, Økapi and DJ Balli himself under various pseudonyms. The label releases music on vinyl (including 12" singles) and digital formats, and maintains an active online presence through its official website and social media. Its output spans breakcore, italo disco, EBM and experimental electronics, with recent releases such as 'Pleasure Cops' by Adriano Canzian & Vitell1 and projects like 'Live Coding Sol LeWitt'. Sonic Belligeranza remains a private, artist-run operation based in Bologna, Italy.

History

Sonic Belligeranza was founded in 2000 by DJ Balli in Bologna, Italy, as an independent record label for electronic music. It was born under the sign of breakcore, a genre that mixes 'black' rhythms such as drum and bass, hip-hop and ragga with 'white' sounds including noise music and power noise. The label quickly established itself as a platform for experimental and uncompromising electronic music. In 2004, responding to the complexity of the genre, Sonic Belligeranza created two sub-labels: -Belligeranza, dedicated to a new form of turntablism, and +Belligeranza, dedicated to conceptual noise music. These sub-labels allowed the parent label to explore distinct facets of the experimental electronic spectrum. Artists signed to the label over the years include FFF, ZombieFleshEater, N., Sandblasting, Kovert, Slaaam, Micropupazzo, Mat 64 & Pira 666, Økapi and DJ Balli under all his pseudonyms. The label has released music on vinyl and digital formats, and has maintained an active online presence through its official website and social media channels. In recent years, Sonic Belligeranza has continued to release new material, including the 12" vinyl and digital release 'Pleasure Cops' by Adriano Canzian & Vitell1 (catalogued as -Belligeranza 11) and projects such as 'Live Coding Sol LeWitt'. The label remains a private, artist-run operation based in Bologna, Italy.
