Overview

Sompo Institute Plus Inc. (SOMPOインスティチュート・プラス株式会社) is the in-house think tank of the SOMPO Group, one of Japan's largest insurance and financial groups. Headquartered on the 40th floor of the Sompo Japan Head Office Building in Nishi-Shinjuku, Tokyo, the company was established on 9 June 1987 as Yasuda Research Institute Co., Ltd. (株式会社安田総合研究所), reflecting its origins within the Yasuda insurance lineage that later became Sompo Japan. Over the following decades it was renamed several times in step with the group's rebranding: Sompo Japan Research Institute in July 2002, Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Research Institute in September 2014, SOMPO Future Research Institute in April 2019, and finally Sompo Institute Plus on 1 April 2022. The institute's stated mission is to provide high-value output based on deep insight and the continuous accumulation of research, under the SOMPO Group purpose of a future filled with "safety, security and health." Its work is organized around seven priority domains: macroeconomics and public policy; healthcare and well-being; work and economic growth; city and mobility; nature and climate; data science; and future vision. Researchers produce reports, policy proposals, commentary and video explanations, and frequently appear in Japanese and international media — including NHK, Bloomberg, Reuters, Nikkei Veritas and Diamond Online — commenting on monetary policy, prices, tax reform and social security. As a corporate think tank, Sompo Institute Plus does not sell consumer products; its "offerings" are research reports, publications such as the Insight Plus series, seminars and symposia, and advisory insight for the SOMPO Group and broader society. It is a wholly owned subsidiary within the SOMPO Group, whose listed parent is SOMPO Holdings, Inc. The company is led by President and Representative Director Shigeki Oki, with Hiroshi Yarimizu as Chairman and Seisaku Kameda as Principal/Executive Economist. Its registered capital is 200 million yen. In recent years the institute has emphasized themes such as climate change and physical risk, regional revitalization, the future of work, digital health and urban mobility, positioning itself as a bridge between rigorous research and the strategic needs of the insurance group and Japanese society.

History

Sompo Institute Plus Inc. traces its origins to the Yasuda insurance and financial lineage, one of the historic zaibatsu groups of Japan. It was established on 9 June 1987 as Yasuda Research Institute Co., Ltd. (株式会社安田総合研究所), serving as a research arm connected to the Yasuda insurance business that would later become Sompo Japan Insurance. The institute was created during Japan's bubble-era expansion, when large financial groups invested heavily in in-house research and economic analysis capabilities. On 1 July 2002, the company was renamed Sompo Japan Research Institute Co., Ltd. (株式会社損保ジャパン総合研究所), aligning its identity with the newly formed Sompo Japan Insurance brand. This period saw the consolidation of Japan's non-life insurance industry and the group's efforts to build a unified corporate brand. On 1 September 2014, following the integration of Sompo Japan and Nipponkoa Insurance, the institute became Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Research Institute Co., Ltd. (損保ジャパン日本興亜総合研究所株式会社). The merged group later adopted the global SOMPO brand, and on 1 April 2019 the institute was renamed SOMPO Future Research Institute Co., Ltd. (SOMPO未来研究所株式会社). On 1 April 2022, the company took its current name, Sompo Institute Plus Inc. (SOMPOインスティチュート・プラス株式会社). The 'Plus' in the name reflects an ambition to add value beyond conventional research, combining deep insight with practical proposals for the group and society. Under the SOMPO Group purpose of a future filled with 'safety, security and health,' the institute organizes its work around seven priority domains: macroeconomics and public policy; healthcare and well-being; work and economic growth; city and mobility; nature and climate; data science; and future vision. In the 2020s the institute has been active in public debate on monetary policy, prices, tax reform, social security, climate risk and regional revitalization. Its researchers — including Principal/Executive Economist Seisaku Kameda and Senior Researcher Rihito Koike — regularly contribute to and are quoted in major media such as Reuters, Bloomberg, NHK, Nikkei Veritas, Diamond Online and Komei Shimbun. The institute also publishes the Insight Plus series and hosts events such as the Happiness Research Symposium. It is led by President and Representative Director Shigeki Oki, with Hiroshi Yarimizu as Chairman, and operates as a wholly owned subsidiary within the SOMPO Group, whose listed parent is SOMPO Holdings, Inc.
