Overview

Somedia Production AG, operating under the imprint Somedia Buchverlag, is the book publishing division of the Swiss media company Somedia AG. Founded in 2005, the publisher is based in Ennenda in the canton of Glarus, Switzerland, and focuses on titles that reflect the social, political, economic and cultural life of southeastern Switzerland — the regions of Graubünden, Glarus, Gaster and See. Its list is deliberately broad in genre: fiction, documentary and entertainment sit alongside knowledge transfer, reportage and all kinds of guides. The unifying editorial line is that books should have their content rooted in the region while reaching a resonance far beyond it. The publisher operates several imprints. The oldest is Edition Terra Grischuna, founded in 1942, whose magazine of the same name has appeared six times a year for four decades and whose book programme covers hiking and travel guides, illustrated volumes and calendars; it joined Somedia AG in mid-2009. Edition Rüegger was founded in 1973 by the economists Claudia and Eduard Rüegger and initially published academic work from University of St. Gallen colleagues before expanding into political, social and later environmental topics. The main Edition Somedia imprint carries current affairs, regional history and popular non-fiction. Somedia Buchverlag benefits from the wider infrastructure of its parent company, including an in-house graphics department, modern prepress and printing, distribution administration, a web and IT solutions firm, and an advertising and marketing company. It can also use Somedia's media platforms — the daily Südostschweiz, Bündner Tagblatt, La Quotidiana, various magazines, regional radio and regional television — for advertising, interviews, reports and previews. The publisher is led by Ralf Seelig, with Eva Zopfi-Höfer heading the editions and advising authors on publication possibilities. Recent and current titles visible on the publisher's website include Dario Cologna: Die Erfolgsformel, Chur & Graubünden, Gedenkstätten in Graubünden, Terra Grischuna Kalender 2027, St. Johann in Müstair, Aktuelle Volkswirtschaftslehre 2026/2027, Piz Languard, Jeu sun ina secundindigena – Ich bin eine Zweitheimische, La glimaia blaua – Die blaue Schnecke, Unterwegs im grünen Tal, Der längste Reisezug der Welt, Graubünden in 100 Geschichten, Omeletten und das Rätsel um den Kunstraub, Ds Landsgmei-Halsband, Den schweizerischen Sozialstaat verstehen and Der alte Russ. The list mixes German and Romansh titles, reflecting the bilingual and regional character of the area it serves.

History

Somedia Buchverlag was founded in 2005 as the book publishing arm of the Swiss media group Somedia AG. From the outset it defined its programme around the social, political, economic and cultural life of southeastern Switzerland, covering the cantons of Graubünden and Glarus as well as the Gaster and See regions. The publisher was deliberately non-dogmatic in genre, publishing fiction, documentary and entertainment alongside knowledge transfer, reportage and guides of all kinds, but with a clear editorial line: books whose content originates in the region yet finds resonance far beyond it. The imprint structure grew through acquisitions and mergers of older publishing houses. Edition Terra Grischuna, the oldest imprint, was founded in 1942; its magazine of the same name has been published six times a year for four decades and reaches subscribers around the world, while its book programme focuses on hiking and travel guides, illustrated volumes and calendars. Edition Terra Grischuna joined Somedia AG in mid-2009. Edition Rüegger was founded in 1973 by the economists Claudia and Eduard Rüegger. Its first authors included fellow students from the University of St. Gallen such as Silvio Borner, Heinz Hauser and Franz Jaeger. The programme quickly expanded into political and social themes and later prominently into environmental topics, building a substantial backlist. As part of Somedia AG, the book publisher can draw on the group's extensive infrastructure: an in-house graphics department, state-of-the-art prepress and printing, distribution administration, a web and IT solutions company, and an advertising and marketing company. It also has access to Somedia's media platforms — the daily Südostschweiz (with print and online editions in Graubünden, Glarus, Gaster and See), Bündner Tagblatt, La Quotidiana, various magazines, regional radio and regional television — for advertisements, interviews, reports and previews. This integration allows authors published by Somedia Buchverlag to benefit from optimised production, marketing and distribution. The publisher is based in Ennenda in the canton of Glarus. Its current leadership includes Ralf Seelig as head of Somedia Buchverlag and Eva Zopfi-Höfer as head of editions, who advises authors on publication possibilities. The list continues to mix German- and Romansh-language titles, reflecting the bilingual character of its home region, and spans current affairs, regional history, economics textbooks, travel guides and children's books.
