Overview
Casa Gispert is one of the oldest food shops in Barcelona, Spain, founded in 1851 in the city centre, next to the Santa Maria del Mar church. The business began as a colonial-goods store selling nuts, dried fruits, coffee, tea, cocoa and spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and saffron. In 1911 the physician Josep Gispert of Centelles bought the shop for his sons Enric and Alfons, who traded as E & A Gispert and specialised in wholesale colonial products. In 1993 the widow of Enric Gispert transferred the business to the Margenat brothers, who shifted it towards retail, and since 2013 it has been run by Gemma Marín and Enric Comelles. The shop retains much of its original interior, including the counter, shelves, wicker baskets and tools, and is especially noted for its wood-fired oven used to roast nuts — described as unique in Europe and still in operation. Today Casa Gispert sells a wide range of products: roasted and raw nuts, dried fruits, organic goods, extra virgin olive oils, vinegars, chocolates, nougats, honeys, jams, sweet wines and gift baskets. It operates a retail store in Barcelona and a warehouse in Viladecavalls (Vallès Occidental), from which it distributes internationally, including online sales and wholesale to gourmet customers. The company presents itself as a family business loyal to its origins, emphasising high-quality, artisanal and local products. The building at Carrer dels Sombrerers, 23, which houses the shop, is a listed local cultural asset (bé cultural d'interès local), and the establishment itself is catalogued as of great interest (category E1). The address 'Sombrerers 23' is sometimes used to refer to the shop or the building, but the commercial brand is Casa Gispert.
History
The building at Carrer dels Sombrerers, 23, in Barcelona's Born district, dates to the late 18th century. In 1828 the innkeeper Gaietà Vínzia i Sogno acquired the property and established an inn known as Can Tano. Over the following decades the inn changed hands and names, and in 1889 Casimir Rull i Blasi, a glazier and tinsmith, built the current five-storey building with three openings per floor and continuous stone balconies. In the early 20th century the ground floor housed a saffron and drugstore run by Francesc Cuadrenys. In 1911 the physician Josep Gispert of Centelles bought the shop for his sons Enric and Alfons, who traded as E & A Gispert and specialised in the wholesale of colonial products — nuts, dried fruits, coffee, tea, cocoa and spices. The business became a landmark in Barcelona for these goods. In 1993 the widow of Enric Gispert transferred the business to the Margenat brothers, who redirected it towards retail trade. Since 2013 the shop has been run by Gemma Marín and Enric Comelles. The interior preserves much of the original furniture: the counter, shelves with and without drawers, wicker baskets and tools. The wood-fired oven for roasting nuts, described as unique in Europe, remains in operation. The establishment is catalogued as of great interest (category E1) and the building as a local cultural asset (bé cultural d'interès local). Today Casa Gispert operates a retail store in Barcelona and a warehouse in Viladecavalls (Vallès Occidental), selling online and distributing internationally.
