Overview
The Som-hegyi turistaház is a mountain hut in the Pilis hills of Hungary, situated on the northern slope of Som-hegy. Administratively it lies within the territory of Pilisszántó, although it is much closer to Pilisszentkereszt, about one kilometre from that village. The building is managed by Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt., the forestry company that oversees the surrounding woodland. The hut is a modest, seasonal accommodation facility rather than a hotel, and it serves hikers and nature visitors in the Pilis region. The building was originally constructed in the early 20th century as a service residence and operated as a forester's house until the 1970s. Because it lacked mains water and electricity, foresters later sought lodging in the village. From 1983 the building was opened to tourists, and it stands close to the route of the Országos Kéktúra, Hungary's long-distance blue trail. In 2013 Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt. modernised the building using its own and owner resources: the roof was renovated, windows and doors were replaced, electricity, water and sewage connections were installed, and the kitchen was refurbished. The investment, reported at 80 million forints, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Access to the hut is on foot or by forestry road. It lies 500 metres from the edge of Pilisszentkereszt, but no asphalt road leads up to it; cars can reach it on a gravel forestry road only with special permission from the forestry company. The hut can be approached from the Országos Kéktúra route (section 15) via the blue square marker. In summer it can accommodate 30 people (13 on beds and 17 on mattresses), while in winter, because of limited hot water supply, capacity is 13 people. Tent pitches are available around the house for a fee, with use of the washrooms. There is no buffet or restaurant operating in the building. As a small, trail-side tourist hut, it forms part of Hungary's network of forest accommodation managed by Pilisi Parkerdő Zrt.
