Overview
The Society of Toruń Lovers (Polish: Towarzystwo Miłośników Torunia, often abbreviated To-Mi-To) is a Polish cultural and scientific association dedicated to the city of Toruń. It was founded on 28 May 1923 in the Artus Court (Dwór Artusa) in Toruń. Its stated goals were to spread knowledge about Toruń, to care for the city's monuments, and to assist in the city's cultural development. The first president was Stefan Michałek, who was then the president of Toruń. At its first meeting, three sections were established: educational and press, conservation and projects, and economic. A year later, two additional sections (publishing and press) were created, along with a Statutory Commission. The society operated until the outbreak of World War II. It was reactivated in 1957. Due to the loss of pre-war files, a new statute and organisational structure were developed. In 1996, the society began publishing the Toruń Yearbook (Rocznik Toruński). For its 75th anniversary in 1998, the first volume of the Toruń Biographical Dictionary (Toruński Słownik Biograficzny) was printed, co-published by the Society of Toruń Lovers and Nicolaus Copernicus University, with sponsorship from the Toruń City Hall and the Voivodeship Office. Since 1 November 2003, the society has organised fundraising events (kwesty) to save historic tombstones of distinguished Toruń residents. In 2002, a new statute was adopted, which remains in force. In 2018, the Society of Toruń Lovers began a collection to rebuild the Monument to Fallen Soldiers of Balloon Troops. The monument commemorated those who fell in battle in the early years of the Second Polish Republic and symbolised Toruń's connection with pre-war military ballooning and aeronautics. The monument was recreated in 2020, on the centenary of Toruń's return to Poland. The society is headquartered at ul. Podmurna 60 in Toruń, and its current president is Krzysztof Mikulski. It remains an active organisation contributing to the cultural and historical life of the city.
History
The Society of Toruń Lovers (Towarzystwo Miłośników Torunia) was founded on 28 May 1923 in the Artus Court in Toruń. Its founding aims were to disseminate knowledge about Toruń, to protect the city's monuments, and to support its cultural development. According to its statute, the organisation initially adopted the name "Towarzystwo miasta Miłośników Torunia" (Society of the City of Toruń Lovers), but the word "miasto" (city) was later dropped. The first president was Stefan Michałek, then president of Toruń. At the first meeting, three sections were created: educational and press, conservation and projects, and economic. A year later, two more sections (publishing and press) were added, and a Statutory Commission was established. The society operated until the outbreak of World War II. It was reactivated in 1957. Because pre-war records were lost, a new statute and organisational structure were drawn up. In 1996, the society began publishing the Rocznik Toruński (Toruń Yearbook). For its 75th anniversary in 1998, the first volume of the Toruński Słownik Biograficzny (Toruń Biographical Dictionary) was published, co-published by the Society of Toruń Lovers and Nicolaus Copernicus University, with sponsorship from the Toruń City Hall and the Voivodeship Office. Since 1 November 2003, the society has organised fundraising events (kwesty) to save historic tombstones of distinguished Toruń residents. In 2002, a new statute was adopted, which remains in effect.
