Overview
The Società Editrice Internazionale (SEI) is an Italian publishing house based in Turin. It was officially constituted in 1908, but its origins trace back to 1859, when it was founded by Don Bosco alongside the Sanctuary of Mary Help of Christians. The company was initially named Società Anonima Internazionale per la Diffusione della Buona Stampa (SAID Buona Stampa). In the years before World War I, it took over the Libreria Salesiana Editrice and specialized in school publishing aimed at Catholic-oriented schools. During the war, buildings owned by the Salesians were temporarily used as hospitals. From 1932, with the Gentile reform, book production accelerated significantly and expanded to include technical-scientific titles. After a difficult period during World War II, which forced the publisher to move to Chieri, post-war production reached its peak, and for several decades SEI was the leading Italian publisher in various fields of school manuals. From the 1980s, a crisis in publishing forced the company to reduce its activities and cede part of its historic headquarters on Corso Regina Margherita to the Piedmont Region, which moved some offices there. Until mid-2018, the publishing house was owned by the Salesian Congregation; it is active in producing religious and non-religious books, maintains a catalogue of thousands of titles, has a widespread distribution network in Italy, and is one of the main Italian school publishers. In May 2018, the entire share capital of the company was acquired by Editrice La Scuola of Brescia, specialized in school publishing.
