Overview

Sociedade Musical Euterpe is a cultural institution based in Portalegre, Portugal, dedicated to musical awareness and music education. It is the oldest cultural institution in the city and is best known for its philharmonic band, Banda Euterpe, and its music school. The organization traces its origins to 1860, when Francisco José Perdigão and a group of local citizens founded the Associação de Socorros Mútuos de Montepio Euterpe Portalegrense, a mutual aid society. Its first statutes were approved in 1866 under King Luís I. In 1945, the mutual aid association was dissolved and replaced by the Escola Musical Euterpe, which later became Sociedade Musical Euterpe. Today, the society continues to operate its music school and philharmonic band, which performs regularly across Portugal and Spain. The band, conducted by Maestro Manuel Henrique de Matos Ruivo, has about 40 members and gives an average of 25 to 30 performances per year, participating in exchanges, band festivals, religious and popular festivities, bullfights, processions, and pilgrimages.

History

The Sociedade Musical Euterpe was founded on 1 December 1860 in Portalegre, Portugal, by Francisco José Perdigão and co-founders João José de Carvalho, Joaquim Manuel Dias Guerra, João Dionísio Caldeira Serejo, José Maria Mourato, Manuel Marques Pereira, Francisco dos Santos Castello, Joaquim Pedro Gonçalves, Frederico Augusto Bolou, Pedro da Fonseca da Ressurreição, and Francisco Vicente Ramos. Originally named Associação de Socorros Mútuos de Montepio Euterpe Portalegrense, it was a mutual aid society governed by an interim board. Its first statutes were published and approved in 1866 by King Luís I, after which an official board was appointed. The association's purpose was to assist sick members, those temporarily unable to work, imprisoned members, and to cover funeral expenses for deceased members. On 29 November 1945, the mutual aid association was dissolved and the Escola Musical Euterpe was created, named in homage to Euterpe, the muse of music and lyric poetry. Over time, it became known as Sociedade Musical Euterpe. Today, it continues to operate its music school and the Banda Euterpe, which is a source of pride for the board, musicians, members, and the city of Portalegre. The band, conducted by Maestro Manuel Henrique de Matos Ruivo, has about 40 members and has performed successfully in various cities in mainland Portugal, the Madeira archipelago, and Spain. It averages 25 to 30 performances per year, focusing on exchanges, band meetings, religious and popular festivities, bullfights, processions, and pilgrimages.
