Overview
The Sociedade Brasileira de Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos (SBCTA) is a multi-professional, non-profit scientific society headquartered at the Instituto de Tecnologia de Alimentos (ITAL) in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. Its mission is to support scientific and technological advancement in food science and technology in Brazil and to stimulate the professional development of technicians and researchers in the field. Its membership includes undergraduate and graduate students, university professors, researchers and professionals from various areas such as food engineers, agronomists, chemists, chemical engineers, biologists, biochemists, pharmacists, veterinarians and nutritionists. The society was first proposed in August 1966 in a document signed in Warsaw by Brazilian scientists André Tosello and Walter Santos during the II International Congress of Food Science and Technology. On the last day of that event, the organizing committee, together with Brazilian and Latin American researchers, approved the creation of the Latin American Association of Food Science and Technology (ALACTA), whose first president was André Tosello. SBCTA was officially created on 8 April 1967 at the Training Center in Campinas (today the Coordenadoria de Assistência Técnica Integral, CATI) by 71 food professionals who signed the founding minutes and elected the first board. SBCTA publishes the scientific journal Food Science and Technology (Revista Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos) since January 1981, indexed in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) databases. It organizes several events, most notably the Brazilian Congress of Food Science and Technology (CBCTA), first held in 1977 at USP in São Paulo. The society maintains regional offices and secretariats across Brazil, including in Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo (headquarters), as well as secretariats in Alagoas, Amazonas, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Santa Catarina and Sergipe. It also awards the Prêmio André Tosello and maintains a founder's page honoring André Tosello, an agronomist trained at ESALQ/USP.
History
The history of SBCTA is intertwined with the expansion of the food industry and the emergence of the first food engineering courses in Brazil. The proposal to create the society was born on another continent, in a document signed in Warsaw by André Tosello and Walter Santos during the II International Congress of Food Science and Technology in August 1966. On the last day of the event in Poland, the congress organizing committee met with Brazilian and Latin American researchers and approved the creation of the Latin American Association of Food Science and Technology (ALACTA), which had André Tosello as its first president. Tosello believed the project should go beyond the developmentalist scenario emerging in the late 1960s and that knowledge needed to be multiplied. SBCTA was officially created on 8 April 1967 at the Training Center in Campinas, today the Coordenadoria de Assistência Técnica Integral (CATI), by 71 food professionals who signed the founding minutes and elected the first board. After the society's creation, André Tosello was appointed by the then rector of Unicamp, Zeferino Vaz, to implement the Faculty of Food Engineering at Unicamp. Since January 1981, the society has been responsible for the journal Food Science and Technology (Revista Ciência e Tecnologia de Alimentos), a scientific periodical indexed in the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) databases. The society also organizes various events, the main one being the Brazilian Congress of Food Science and Technology (CBCTA), first held in 1977 at USP in São Paulo; the 21st edition took place in 2008 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, and the next was scheduled for 2010 in Salvador, Bahia. In addition to CBCTA, the society supports a range of other food-related events in the country, such as the Latin American Symposium on Food Science (SLACA), a biennial event held in odd years in Campinas, São Paulo. The society maintains 15 regional offices and secretariats. There are 5 regional offices located in Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo (headquarters), and 10 regional secretariats in Alagoas, Amazonas, Ceará, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Santa Catarina and Sergipe. The current statute was approved at an Extraordinary General Assembly held on 18 December 2003 in the Central Auditorium of ITAL, presided over by Prof. Jorge Mancini Filho, and registered at the 1st Civil Registry of Legal Entities in Campinas, São Paulo, microfilmed under order number 2633 of protocol A, and recorded on 3 May 2004 in conformity with the new Civil Code (Article 2.031 of Law 10.406 of 10 January 2002). The society's website lists a board and council for 2025/2026, a founder's page, a history page, and the Prêmio André Tosello.
