Overview

The Société nouvelle des transports de l'agglomération niçoise (ST2N) was a French public transport company created in 1991 as a société par actions simplifiée. It was formed to take part in the new urban transport service of Nice, launched in 1992 under the commercial name SunBus, succeeding the earlier company TN, itself a subsidiary and successor of the historic Tramways de Nice et du Littoral (TNL) since 1975. Its creation marked the end of 90 years of Nice transport managed by the Mariage group, as ST2N became dependent on the CGEA/Connex group and thus a subsidiary of Veolia Transport. From 2005, ST2N became the main operating company of the Lignes d'Azur network for the Communauté urbaine Nice Côte d'Azur (NCA) under a public service delegation (DSP) contract. In that role, the metropolitan authority defined transport policy, while ST2N applied decisions on timetables, lines and fares. Because it could not operate the entire urban network of 114 lines or services alone, ST2N was supported by partners including Rapides Côte d'Azur (RCA, a Veolia subsidiary), Société des Autocars Martin (SAM, Hervouet group), Société Automobile de Provence (SAP, a Kéolis subsidiary), Transport Régional des Alpes-Maritimes (TRAM, Péglion group), Transport Automobile Nice Plan du Var (TANP), and local independent companies Bréma & Abello. ST2N was a subsidiary of Veolia Transport from 1991 to 2013, then of Transdev from March 2013. In September 2012, the metropolitan council of Nice Côte d'Azur voted to bring the urban services of the Lignes d'Azur network into a régie (public corporation) as of September 2013. ST2N therefore ceased operating the network from the start of the 2013 school year, although its 1,100 employees kept their private contracts and became employees of the Régie Ligne d'Azur. On 24 October 2017, Transdev Urbain, as sole shareholder, dissolved the company, which was struck off on 4 February 2018. The Lignes d'Azur brand and website continue to represent the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolitan transport network, offering services such as on-demand transport, the Mobil'Azur door-to-door service for people with reduced mobility, and the Bus 100% Neige service to winter resorts. ST2N itself is now a defunct corporate entity, remembered as the main private operator of Nice's modern bus network before it was taken back into public management.

History

The Société nouvelle des transports de l'agglomération niçoise (ST2N) was created in 1991 as a société par actions simplifiée, intended to be part of the new urban service of Nice inaugurated in 1992 under the commercial name SunBus. It succeeded the company TN, which had itself been a subsidiary and successor of the historic Tramways de Nice et du Littoral (TNL) since 1975. This marked the end of 90 years of Nice transport managed by the Mariage group, as ST2N depended on the CGEA/Connex group and thus became a subsidiary of Veolia Transport. In 2005, ST2N became the main operating company of the Lignes d'Azur network of the Communauté urbaine Nice Côte d'Azur (NCA) through a public service delegation (DSP) contract. The communauté urbaine defined transport policy, while ST2N applied its decisions on timetables, lines and fares. Since ST2N could not operate the entire urban network of 114 lines or services alone, it was assisted by partners: Rapides Côte d'Azur (RCA, a Veolia subsidiary), Société des Autocars Martin (SAM, Hervouet group), Société Automobile de Provence (SAP, a Kéolis subsidiary), Transport Régional des Alpes-Maritimes (TRAM, Péglion group), Transport Automobile Nice Plan du Var (TANP), and local independent companies Bréma & Abello. ST2N was a subsidiary of Veolia Transport from 1991 to 2013, then of Transdev from March 2013. In September 2012, the metropolitan council of Nice Côte d'Azur voted to convert the urban services of the Lignes d'Azur network into a régie as of September 2013. ST2N ceased operating the network from the start of the 2013 school year, but its 1,100 employees kept their private contracts and became employees of the Régie Ligne d'Azur. On 24 October 2017, Transdev Urbain, the sole shareholder, dissolved the company, which was struck off on 4 February 2018.
