Overview

The Société des études camusiennes (SEC) is a French non-profit association (association loi de 1901) founded in 1982 on the occasion of the Colloque de Cerisy-la-Salle by Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi and Raymond Gay-Crosier. It is dedicated to the knowledge of the life, thought and work of the writer Albert Camus, Nobel Prize in Literature 1957. The society brings together both amateur and professional readers of Camus and disseminates his thought through its website, a printed bulletin sent to members, and a range of scholarly and public activities. The SEC's core activities include an annual journal, Présence d'Albert Camus, an electronic newsletter published twice a year, Chroniques camusiennes, and its website www.etudes-camusiennes.fr. It also maintains bibliographic tools, notably the Nouvelle Bibliographie Albert Camus, regularly updated by the society. The association organises conferences and events, intervenes in the press and with institutions, and supports research on Camus. Membership is open to anyone interested in Camus, and the society has an international reach with North American and Japanese sections. Its governance includes three vice-presidencies: one French, one North American and one Japanese. Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi presided from 1982 to 2004; she was succeeded by Agnès Spiquel, professor emerita of French literature at the University of Valenciennes, and since 2020 the society has been presided by Anne Prouteau, a lecturer at the Université catholique de l'Ouest. The society is registered in France (SIREN, Répertoire national des associations) and remains an active scholarly association. It does not sell commercial products; its 'offerings' are its journal, newsletter, website, bibliographies and events.

History

The Société des études camusiennes (SEC) was founded in 1982 on the occasion of the Colloque de Cerisy-la-Salle by Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi and Raymond Gay-Crosier. Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi presided over the society from 1982 to 2004. The association was created to bring together readers and scholars of Albert Camus and to promote the study of his life, thought and work. From its early years, the SEC established a tradition of scholarly publication. Its annual journal, Présence d'Albert Camus, became a central vehicle for Camus studies, and the society also began publishing a printed bulletin for its members. Over time, it developed an international presence, with sections in North America and Japan, and its governance structure came to include three vice-presidencies: one French, one North American and one Japanese. After the presidency of Jacqueline Lévi-Valensi, Agnès Spiquel, professor emerita of French literature at the University of Valenciennes, took over the leadership. Under her presidency, the society continued to organise conferences, intervene in the press and with institutions, and maintain its bibliographic tools. In 2020, Anne Prouteau, a lecturer at the Université catholique de l'Ouest, succeeded Agnès Spiquel as president. The society has also expanded its digital presence. Its website, www.etudes-camusiennes.fr, provides information about the society, its events, its publications and its bibliographies, including the Nouvelle Bibliographie Albert Camus, which is regularly updated. The SEC also publishes an electronic newsletter, Chroniques camusiennes, twice a year. The association remains active and is registered in France as an association loi de 1901, listed in the Répertoire national des associations and identifiable by its SIREN number.
