Overview
Snezhny Kom M (Russian: Снежный Ком М) is a Russian independent publishing house specializing in science fiction, fantasy, and surreal prose. It was founded in 2010 in Moscow by Erik Bregis, who had previously established the Riga-based publishing house Snezhny Kom in 2006. The 'M' in the name stands for Moscow, distinguishing it from the original Latvian venture. Co-founder Gleb Gusakov, a writer publishing under the pseudonym Yaroslav Verov, joined the project. The publishing house is known for its small print runs, internal illustrations, and commitment to high literary quality. It collaborates with well-known Russian science fiction authors such as Dalia Truskinovskaya, Sergey Chekmaev, Zinovy Yuryev, and Gennady Prashkevich. The company operates three main series: 'Real Science Fiction' (Настоящая фантастика), 'Unreal Prose' (Нереальная проза), and 'Anthologies' (Антологии), and since 2012 has also published 'Non-series editions' (Внесерийные издания). In 2012, it launched an online 'Book Kiosk' offering electronic versions of its books. The publisher has received several awards, including 'Best Publisher' at Interpresscon in 2011 and 2012, the V. Bugrov Prize at Aelita in 2011, and the 'Second Pancake' award at Zvyozdny Most in 2010. It remains an active player in the Russian science fiction publishing market.
History
The history of Snezhny Kom M is closely tied to its predecessor, the Riga-based publishing house Snezhny Kom. On February 14, 2002, Erik Bregis created the literary portal snezhny.com. In 2005, he published a collection of poetry by authors from the portal. In 2006, Bregis officially registered the publishing house 'Snezhny Kom' in Riga, aimed at Russian-speaking readers in Latvia. The publishing house adopted the principle of maintaining high artistic quality and paying special attention to book design. At the 2009 Interpresscon convention, Snezhny Kom received an award as the most professional and original publisher. Works published by the house were longlisted for the Russian Booker and Big Book prizes, and regular author Sergey Krasilnikov received the national Debut prize in two categories in 2008. From 2006 to 2009, Snezhny Kom (without the 'M') was based in Riga. Later, logistical difficulties forced Erik Bregis to move publishing activities to Moscow in January 2010 and register the publishing house under the new name 'Snezhny Kom M'. Writer Gleb Gusakov, who writes under the pseudonym Yaroslav Verov, became a co-founder. In spring 2010, the first books were released: a collection by Yaroslav Verov and Igor Minakov titled 'Operation Virus' (series 'Real Science Fiction') and a collection by Dmitry Kolodan titled 'The Time of the Jabberwock' (series 'Unreal Prose'). In 2011, a third permanent series, 'Anthologies', was added, including thematic collections of novellas and short stories. The series opened with the books 'Klassitsium' and 'Feminium'. In the first anthology, contemporary science fiction authors wrote in the name of literary classics; in the second, male authors wrote feminist prose under female names. To promote 'Feminium' and 'Klassitsium', the publisher held a 'Guess the Author' contest. Since 2012, the publisher launched the series 'Non-series editions', printing books worthy of attention but not fitting the format of the above series. In 2012, the 'Book Kiosk' opened on the Snezhny Kom M website, offering electronic versions of the publisher's books, as well as books that for some reason were not published in paper form. The publishing house has received several awards: 'Best Publisher' at Interpresscon in 2011 and 2012, the V. Bugrov Prize at Aelita in 2011, and the 'Second Pancake' award (for contribution to the development of science fiction) at Zvyozdny Most in 2010. As of the latest information, Snezhny Kom M continues to operate as an independent publisher, recently expanding into audiobooks and podcasts.
