Overview

Snegiri-Music (Снегири-музыка) is a Russian independent record label founded in 1998 by Oleg Nesterov, the leader of the band Megapolis. It is one of the longest-running independent labels in the Russian music market and remains active today. The label's origins lie in Nesterov's production work: in 1997 he took on producing the project Masha i Medvedi, and the strong result encouraged him to establish his own recording company the following year. Over the decades Snegiri-Music has released albums by a broad roster of Russian artists and bands, including Naik Borzov, Evgeny Grishkovets, Alina Orlova, and groups such as Undervud, 2H Company, Yolochnye Igrushki, Khoronko-Orkestr, Biplan, Lakmus, Nozh dlya Frau Myuller, Kassiopeya, Cheese People, NetSlov, Everything is Made in China, Varya Demidova, The Retuses, Igor Vdovin, Ifwe, Mgzavrebi and many others. This roster spans pop, rock, indie, electronic and experimental music, reflecting the label's curatorial breadth. In 2016 the label signed a licensing agreement with the major company Warner Music Russia, under which Warner received exclusive rights to digital distribution of the Snegiri-Music catalogue, which numbers more than 1,200 compositions. The label retained the rights to synchronization and to remuneration for public performance of the works. The label's official website continues to promote new singles and releases from its artists, and its catalogue is distributed digitally through major platforms.

History

Snegiri-Music was founded in 1998 by Oleg Nesterov, the leader of the Russian band Megapolis. Nesterov's move into label work grew out of production: in 1997 he decided to produce the project Masha i Medvedi, and the impressive result prompted him to create his own recording company. From its base in Moscow, the label built a reputation as one of Russia's leading independent imprints, releasing albums across pop, rock, indie, electronic and experimental music. Among the artists and bands whose albums appeared on Snegiri-Music are Naik Borzov, Evgeny Grishkovets, Alina Orlova, Undervud, 2H Company, Yolochnye Igrushki, Khoronko-Orkestr, Biplan, Lakmus, Nozh dlya Frau Myuller, Kassiopeya, Cheese People, NetSlov, Everything is Made in China, Varya Demidova, The Retuses, Igor Vdovin, Ifwe and Mgzavrebi, among many others. The label also maintained a presence online through its official website, a LiveJournal community, Blogger, Vimeo, a release catalogue on the Kroogi creative community platform, and a discography listed on MusicBrainz. A significant turning point came in 2016, when Snegiri-Music signed a licensing agreement with Warner Music Russia. Under the deal, Warner Music Russia obtained exclusive rights to digital distribution of the Snegiri-Music catalogue, which by then numbered more than 1,200 compositions. The label retained the rights to synchronization and to remuneration for public performance of the works. The agreement gave the independent label access to major-label digital distribution infrastructure while preserving key rights. The label remains active, promoting new singles and releases from its roster through its official website and digital platforms. Its long history and diverse catalogue have made it a notable fixture of the Russian independent music scene.
