SmartestEnergy was established in 2000 as an aggregator of independent generation projects in the UK. In 2001, Marubeni acquired a stake in SmartestEnergy Limited. In 2008, SmartestEnergy Limited entered the UK supply market, powering large businesses and Commercial and Industrial customers with renewable energy. In 2012, it was awarded UK Energy Supplier of the Year. In 2015, it launched the UK's first certified 100% Renewable Supply product for Commercial & Industrial businesses. In 2018, it was awarded UK Energy Supplier of the Year for the second time. In 2019, it acquired its UK SME supply business, SmartestEnergy Business, and opened its first international office in Syracuse, New York; SmartestEnergy US LLC launched, supplying flexible, reliable and creative energy solutions to businesses in the United States. In 2020, it opened a second international office in Sydney, Australia, and its UK headquarters moved to Canary Wharf. In 2021, it celebrated 20 years in business. In 2023, it launched a new brand identity, expanded into New England ISO, and ranked #1 in Pre-Sale and Post-Sale customer satisfaction. As of 2024, it has a 20+ year history of driving energy markets forwards globally and 5+ years of established presence in the US.
