Overview

Smart Communications Inc., commonly known as Smart, is a Philippine telecommunications and digital services company wholly owned by PLDT Inc. It operates as one of the country’s principal mobile-network providers, serving consumers and organizations through cellular voice, messaging, mobile broadband, wireless fixed-broadband, digital, and satellite-communications offerings. Its terrestrial network history spans 2G, 3G, 3.5G HSPA+, 4G LTE, and LTE-Advanced technologies, while 5G deployment has expanded across multiple Philippine locations. The company was organized in 1991 as Smart Information Technology, Inc. by Filipino investors led by Orlando B. Vea and David T. Fernando, in anticipation of liberalization in the Philippine telecommunications sector. It received a congressional franchise in 1992 and provisional authority to operate a mobile cellular service in 1993. Commercial cellular operations began in December 1993. During its early expansion, Smart attracted investment and strategic participation from First Pacific interests, including Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, and Japan’s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. It also developed capabilities beyond mobile service, including local exchange, international gateway, paging, and inter-carrier transmission services. PLDT completed a share-swap acquisition of Smart in March 2000, making Smart a wholly owned subsidiary. Under PLDT, the brand became a central vehicle for wireless growth and digital transformation. Smart introduced or popularized several Philippine mobile innovations, including Smart Load, an over-the-air electronic prepaid-loading system, and PasaLoad, which allows prepaid users to transfer credits by SMS. Its Smart Money mobile-wallet and remittance initiatives were later associated with the evolution of digital financial services in the PLDT ecosystem, while Smart Padala was integrated into Maya. Smart has repeatedly used network upgrades and device-led programs to expand mobile data adoption. It unveiled the Netphone, an operator-supported Android smartphone line, in 2011; launched commercial LTE mobile broadband in 2012; introduced LTE-Advanced commercially in Boracay in 2016; and activated its initial commercial 5G network in selected business districts and major commercial areas in July 2020. In 2016, Smart and PLDT adopted refreshed visual identities as part of a broader digital pivot. The company also signed a 2017 memorandum of understanding with Huawei concerning the strategic and commercial development of a Philippine 5G ecosystem. Smart operates consumer brands and service lines including Smart, TNT, Smart Bro, and, historically, Sun Cellular and Sun Wireless Broadband. Subscriber totals have changed substantially following the Philippine SIM Registration Act and the deactivation of unregistered SIM cards. The company reported 50.0 million subscribers in July 2023, 55.2 million in November 2023, and 59 million at the end of 2024. Smart also provides satellite communications through Smart Sat and Marino, serving maritime customers beyond purely domestic cellular use. The brand has a visible role in Philippine sports, entertainment, and esports. It has supported basketball and volleyball teams, sponsored Mobile Legends: Bang Bang activities, and participated in international entertainment properties including KCON:TACT, the Mnet Asian Music Awards, and M Countdown. In 2025, Smart introduced KiQ, an app-based mobile virtual network operator brand, adding a digitally oriented brand experiment to its broader portfolio. Smart’s current positioning combines nationwide mobile connectivity, high-speed data, digital services, network technology upgrades, and ecosystem links to PLDT and Maya.

History

Smart Communications was organized on January 24, 1991, under the name Smart Information Technology, Inc. A group of Filipino investors led by Orlando B. Vea and David T. Fernando formed the company as the Philippines moved toward telecommunications liberalization. Smart obtained a congressional franchise in April 1992 and provisional authority to operate a mobile cellular service in May 1993. It began commercial cellular operations in December of that year. The company’s initial development involved strategic and financial participation from First Pacific, through Philippine interests associated with Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, and from Japan’s Nippon Telegraph and Telephone. Smart expanded its scope beyond cellular operations by establishing local exchange services in assigned areas and obtaining authority for international gateway, paging, and inter-carrier transmission services. On March 24, 2000, PLDT completed a share-swap acquisition that made Smart its wholly owned subsidiary. This created a long-term corporate structure in which Smart served as PLDT’s principal wireless and mobile-data brand. Smart was recognized as the Philippines’ best employer in a 2003 Hewitt Associates study, according to the company’s historical account. During the 2010s, Smart emphasized mobile data, devices, and digital financial services. In February 2011 it unveiled the Netphone at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Android-compliant product line was designed for emerging markets and was presented as an operator-managed smartphone platform. Smart subsequently expanded its network technology, launching commercial LTE mobile broadband on August 25, 2012. On April 13, 2016, it introduced commercial LTE-Advanced service in Boracay, Aklan. In June 2016, Smart and PLDT revealed new logos and brand identities as part of a digital repositioning. Smart and PLDT pursued 5G preparations through a February 2017 memorandum of understanding with Huawei. In April of the same year, Republic Act No. 10926 renewed Smart’s telecommunications franchise for 25 years. The company later began commercial 5G service on July 30, 2020, initially covering selected locations in Metro Manila and major commercial districts. Its network portfolio has historically included 2G, 3G, HSPA+, LTE, and LTE-Advanced, with 5G deployment continuing in additional Philippine locations. Smart’s consumer and digital portfolio has included Smart, TNT, Smart Bro, Sun Cellular, and Sun Wireless Broadband. Sun Cellular was absorbed into Smart and became defunct as a separate service brand by 2022. Smart also developed Smart Load, an electronic prepaid-loading system, and PasaLoad, an SMS-based mechanism for transferring prepaid credits. Smart Money and Smart Padala extended the company’s role into mobile-wallet and remittance services; Smart Padala was subsequently integrated into Maya. Satellite services branded Smart Sat and Marino broaden the company’s reach to maritime and global shipping customers. Subscriber reporting has been affected by the Philippine SIM Registration Act and the resulting deactivation of unregistered SIM cards. Smart reported more than 66 million mobile subscribers in 2022 across Smart, Sun, and TNT, alongside more than 3.9 million wireless-broadband subscribers under Smart Bro and Sun Wireless Broadband. It reported 50.0 million subscribers in July 2023 and 55.2 million in November 2023. By the end of 2024, the reported subscriber base stood at 59 million. The brand also participates in sports, esports, and entertainment marketing. PLDT and Smart launched Omega esports, while Smart sponsored Mobile Legends: Bang Bang events and supported basketball and volleyball teams. It has maintained or announced sponsorship relationships involving FIBA, KCON:TACT, the Mnet Asian Music Awards, and M Countdown. In August 2025, Smart launched KiQ, an app-based MVNO brand, reflecting continued experimentation with digitally distributed mobile services.
