Overview

The Slovenian Veteran Car And Motorcycle Association (Slovene: Slovenska veteranska avto-moto zveza, SVAMZ) is the umbrella body for historic vehicle clubs in Slovenia. It was conceived in 1997 at the opening of the Motorcycle Museum in Vransko, where it still keeps its headquarters and main office, and was formally registered with the Administrative Unit Žalec under registration number 283 on 5 November 1999. Its founding clubs included AMD Tržič, MDO Naklo, MK Leteči Kranjci, Moto Veterani Šoštanj, the Klub ljubiteljev Klasičnih in Športnih Vozil Kidričevo, C.M.O.C. – Klub lastnikov in Ljubiteljev Klasičnih Motociklov and MD Tržišče. SVAMZ functions as a federation rather than a commercial manufacturer: it brings together more than fifty member clubs and has several thousand historic vehicles recorded in its register. Immediately after its establishment it began issuing nationally recognised certificates (identity cards) for historic vehicles, which confer various benefits and confirm the vehicle's status as a historic machine. It also publishes the magazine Avto Motor Classic, which all members receive free of charge, and organises exhibitions, lectures and sporting events through its member clubs. The association is internationally connected. In 2001 it joined FIVA, the Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens, which unites over 1.8 million members worldwide. In 2005 Slovenia's Ministry of Culture granted it the status of a public-interest cultural organisation in recognition of its work preserving movable technical heritage; today it holds the status of a non-governmental organisation in the public interest in the field of culture. In 2007 SVAMZ commissioners attended a specialised educational seminar organised by CTIF, the International Association of Fire and Rescue Service, and obtained an international licence for evaluating vintage firefighting vehicles. In 2011 the association became a member of ICOM, the International Council of Museums, and of TICCIH, the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage. Its stated aims include preserving technical and cultural heritage, especially vehicles; collecting and publishing information in the field; drawing up expert criteria for assessing the technical condition of historic vehicles and licensing individual assessors; maintaining a register of historic vehicles; coordinating the activities of member clubs; organising exhibitions and expert lectures; setting criteria for sporting competitions and licensing officials, athletes and restorers; and representing the interests of historic vehicle owners before state bodies and in relations with domestic and international organisations, in the spirit of FIVA. The current president is Franci Škrjanec; previous presidents were Rok Rotar, Bernard Oblak and Engelbert Černilec.
