Overview

Slovanský přehled (Slavonic Review) is a Czech academic historical journal published by the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences. It was founded in October 1898 by Adolf Černý as a continuation of Ed. Jelínek's Slovanský sborník, with the subtitle 'Sborník statí, dopisův a zpráv ze života slovanského' (A collection of articles, letters and reports from Slavic life). From its inception, it attracted contributors from Czech, Slovak and other Slavic nations, and was regarded as an objective source of knowledge about the Slavic world. Publication was interrupted by World War I and was only renewed in 1925 by Adolf Černý after he gained the support of younger followers. In 1927 the first editorial circle was formed by Jos. Fiala, Antonín Frinta, V. Charvát, Em. Janoušek, H. Ripka and Jan Slavík. Due to declining health, Černý stepped down as editor at the end of 1930, and Antonín Frinta took over (until 1939), later with Jan Slavík. Since the 1960s the journal has been a scholarly historical periodical, and since the early 1990s it has been a rigorously peer-reviewed journal. Today it appears twice a year under the bilingual title Slovanský přehled / Slavonic Review, publishing contributions in English, Czech and Slovak. Its focus is on the modern history of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Long-time editor-in-chief Miroslav Tejchman was succeeded in 2010 by historian and Balkan specialist Ladislav Hladký of Masaryk University in Brno and historian and Russian specialist Radomír Vlček of the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences. Since 2022 the managing editor has been historian and Balkan specialist František Šístek. The journal's international scientific council consists of twelve leading foreign experts, including historian Ivo Goldstein, Slavist Marc L. Greenberg, historian Catherine Horel, anthropologist Božidar Jezernik, historian Piotr M. Majewski, historian Miloš Řezník, historian Tamara Scheer, historian Dubravka Stojanović and Slavist and literary scholar Andrew Baruch Wachtel.

History

Slovanský přehled was founded in October 1898 by Adolf Černý as a monthly, continuing Ed. Jelínek's Slovanský sborník, with the subtitle 'Sborník statí, dopisův a zpráv ze života slovanského'. It brought together Czech, Slovak and other Slavic contributors and was respected as an objective source on the Slavic world. A regular contributor from Russia, Poland and Serbia was the writer Čeněk Slepánek. Publication was interrupted by World War I; Černý was able to renew it only in 1925 after gaining the support of younger followers. In 1927 the first editorial circle was formed by Jos. Fiala, Antonín Frinta, V. Charvát, Em. Janoušek, H. Ripka and Jan Slavík. Due to shaken health, Černý gave up the editorship at the end of 1930; Antonín Frinta then led the journal in the same spirit until 1939, later with Jan Slavík. From the 1960s it became a scholarly historical journal, and from the early 1990s a rigorously peer-reviewed periodical. Today, under the bilingual title Slovanský přehled / Slavonic Review, it is published twice a year by the Institute of History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, with articles in English, Czech and Slovak. Unlike its pre-war form, which combined academic and journalistic approaches, the present Slovanský přehled is a strictly professional periodical emphasizing the modern history of Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Long-time editor-in-chief Miroslav Tejchman was succeeded in 2010 by Ladislav Hladký (Masaryk University, Brno) and Radomír Vlček (Institute of History, Czech Academy of Sciences). Since 2022 the managing editor has been František Šístek. The international scientific council includes twelve leading foreign experts such as Ivo Goldstein, Marc L. Greenberg, Catherine Horel, Božidar Jezernik, Piotr M. Majewski, Miloš Řezník, Tamara Scheer, Dubravka Stojanović and Andrew Baruch Wachtel.
