Overview

Slotbier op Seyst is a Dutch specialty beer brand and non-profit foundation (stichting) based in Zeist, Netherlands. It was founded in 2017 by eight members of Rotaryclub Op Seyst, who began brewing their own craft beer with a single goal: to do something good with something tasty. The full proceeds from the sale of Slotbier are donated to charitable causes, with a focus on youth and projects in the Zeist region. The brand is a contract brewery (brouwerijhuurder), meaning it does not own its own brewing facilities but commissions production from partner breweries. The flagship beer, Slotbier Blond, is a characterful blond beer brewed by Gooische Bierbrouwerij in Hilversum. It is a high-fermentation blond beer with an alcohol content of 7%. A second variant, Slotbier Chambière (5.5% ABV), was introduced in December 2022 and is brewed with grape skins from the Souvignier Gris grape, sourced from vineyard Beek en Royen in Zeist. The foundation has worked with several breweries over the years, including Stadsbrouwerij Middelburg in the early phase, Brouwerij Dit Bier in Zeist (with Brouwerij Brasser as intermediary) after the corona pause, and currently Gooische Bierbrouwerij in Hilversum. Slotbier was officially presented on 13 October 2017 at Slot Zeist, with the first bottle handed to alderman Marcel Fluitman. Production was temporarily halted during the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed in autumn 2021 under a new foundation board. The organization operates on a non-profit basis and donates proceeds via the Rotaryclub to social projects, including the redesign of playgrounds for special secondary education and support for the Helen Dowling Institute for psychological care for young people with cancer. In May 2025, Slotbier Blond won a gold medal at the Dutch Beer Challenge in the 'blond' category and was named 'Best Beer of the Netherlands 2025' based on the highest score among gold medal winners. As a result, annual production was scaled up from 500 to 8,000 liters. The brand positions itself as 'more than just well-intentioned' (méér dan alleen goedbedoeld), emphasizing its social mission alongside its craft beer quality.

History

Stichting Slotbier op Seyst was founded in 2017 by eight members of Rotaryclub Op Seyst. The inspiration for the initiative arose after a visit to brewery De Drie Ringen in Amersfoort. With the introduction of the specialty beer Slotbier, the organization aimed to revive the tradition of local beer in Zeist. In the nineteenth century, Zeist had a brewery called De Leeuw (founded in 1863), which existed for about forty years. This brewery was located in the Broederhuis near Slot Zeist. Slotbier was officially presented on 13 October 2017 at Slot Zeist. The first bottle was handed to alderman Marcel Fluitman. During the COVID-19 pandemic, production was temporarily halted. In autumn 2021, production was resumed by a new foundation board. The foundation markets several specialty beers. The first beer, Slotbier Blond (originally: Rond Blond), was developed in 2017. It is a high-fermentation blond beer with an alcohol content of 7%. Since December 2022, a second variant has been offered: Slotbier Chambière. This beer, with an alcohol content of 5.5%, is brewed with grape skins from the Souvignier Gris grape, sourced from vineyard Beek en Royen in Zeist. The foundation has its beers brewed at various breweries. In the initial phase, around 2017, Slotbier was developed and brewed in collaboration with Stadsbrouwerij Middelburg. After a temporary stop during the corona period, production was resumed in 2022 at Brouwerij Dit Bier in Zeist, with Brouwerij Brasser as intermediary. Since then, production has moved to Gooische Bierbrouwerij in Hilversum. The organization operates on a non-profit basis and donates the proceeds via the Rotaryclub to social projects. Among other things, this financed the redesign of playgrounds for special secondary education, and the Helen Dowling Institute received support for psychological care for young people with cancer. In May 2025, Slotbier Blond received a gold medal during the Dutch Beer Challenge in the 'blond' category. In addition, the beer was named 'Best Beer of the Netherlands 2025', based on the highest score among the gold medal winners. As a result of this title, the annual production of the beer was scaled up from 500 to 8,000 liters.
