Overview

Skytanking provides aviation fuel services and infrastructure for airports, airlines, oil companies and other aviation-sector customers. Its activities cover the operational chain between airport fuel delivery and aircraft refuelling, including into-plane fuelling, fuel storage, hydrant-system management, and the financing, construction and operation of airport fuel facilities. The company also provides engineering and related technical services for aviation-fuel systems. The business originated in 1998, when Marquard & Bahls entered aviation fuelling through the planned acquisition of a 50-percent interest in Omni Aircraft Service at Munich Airport. Skytanking became a separate Marquard & Bahls division in 2001. It expanded through acquisitions, airport concessions, joint ventures and operating contracts, building a network across Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. Early expansion included Merlin Fuels in Ostend, Belgium, operations at Miami International Airport, and the acquisition of Belgian Fuelling & Services Company at Brussels Airport. The company subsequently entered India through the IndianOil Skytanking joint venture, France through AirFuel, Italy through HUB and PAR, the United Kingdom through North Air, South Africa through Skytanking Calulo, and Turkey through Skytanking Ovenon. A distinctive part of Skytanking's model is its participation in airport fuel infrastructure under build-own-operate and build-own-operate-transfer arrangements. Under these structures, Skytanking and its partners may finance, construct and operate storage tanks, pipelines and hydrant systems for extended periods before transferring the assets when required by the contract. Projects associated with this model included the fuel facility at Stuttgart Airport and the fuel infrastructure at Bangalore International Airport. The company also managed fuel-storage and hydrant systems at airports including Indianapolis, Munich and Brussels. Skytanking's network grew through the 2010s as it added airport fuelling and fuel-management activities in France, Germany, Turkey, Malta and Spain. In 2014, it sold its United States subsidiary and its 14 American locations to Aircraft Service International Group, while acquiring airport activities at Munich, Vienna, Linz and Klagenfurt from the same group. This rebalanced the portfolio toward Europe and strengthened its German and Austrian operations. Further developments included the acquisition of an 84-percent interest in Hydrant Refuelling System in Belgium, the creation of Skytanking Ovenon in Turkey, and the acquisition of Sun Jet Services employees and assets at German airports. In 2021, Skytanking was sold to PrimeFlight Aviation Services. Marquard & Bahls retained a minority stake in PrimeFlight and consequently continued to hold an indirect economic interest in Skytanking. The company remains an airport-services specialist whose brand is primarily business-to-business rather than consumer-facing. Reference material reported that, in November 2019, Skytanking operated at 83 airports in 14 countries, handled approximately 23.2 million cubic metres of aviation fuel annually and refuelled about two million aircraft. It reported approximately 1,890 employees at the end of 2018.

History

Skytanking began in 1998 when Marquard & Bahls pursued an entry into aviation fuelling through the acquisition of a 50-percent interest in Omni Aircraft Service at Munich Airport. The activity was initially developed within Marquard & Bahls and became a separate Skytanking division in 2001. The company then used a combination of acquisitions, airport contracts and joint ventures to establish a multi-country aviation-fuel network. In 2002, Skytanking acquired Merlin Fuels at Ostend cargo airport in Belgium. In 2003, it began operating at Miami International Airport, where it provided fuelling services for United Airlines and Air Canada. Its European footprint expanded significantly in 2005 through the acquisition of Belgian Fuelling & Services Company, which handled a substantial share of into-plane fuelling at Brussels Airport and held service contracts at airports including Athens, Luxembourg and Liège. Skytanking Zurich also began into-plane operations in 2005, followed by Skytanking Vienna in 2006. India became an important infrastructure market in 2006, when Skytanking, Indian Oil and IndianOiltanking received a 20-year concession for the fuel facility at the new Bangalore International Airport. The IndianOil Skytanking joint venture began fuelling operations there in 2008. During the same period, Skytanking expanded its European and American airport activities and became one of Marquard & Bahls' principal business areas. The company developed its airport-infrastructure model through long-term concessions. In 2007, it signed a 30-year build-own-operate-transfer agreement with Stuttgart Airport for a new aviation-fuel storage facility, which opened in 2009. It also received responsibility for managing and operating the fuel-storage and hydrant system at Indianapolis International Airport when the new airport opened in 2008. In 2009, Skytanking acquired AirFuel and entered the French market at Paris Charles de Gaulle. It also purchased the Italian companies HUB and PAR, giving it fuelling operations at airports in Milan, Rome, Naples and Palermo. During the 2010s, Skytanking continued to broaden its geographic coverage. Skytanking Calulo began operations at King Shaka International Airport in Durban in 2010, covering into-plane fuelling and the tank-storage and hydrant system. That year, Skytanking acquired 51 percent of North Air in the United Kingdom, adding into-plane fuelling and fuel-storage management at numerous British airports. France expanded with operations at Nice and Bordeaux in 2012, while Frankfurt became Skytanking's 50th airport in November of that year. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport was added in 2013. In 2014, Skytanking sold its US subsidiary and 14 American sites to Aircraft Service International Group. The transaction also transferred ASIG activities at Munich, Vienna, Linz and Klagenfurt to Skytanking, reinforcing the company's Central European network. Skytanking subsequently began into-plane fuelling at Hamburg Airport and completed the acquisition of an 84-percent stake in Hydrant Refuelling System in Belgium. HRS operated the storage and hydrant system at Brussels National Airport. At the end of 2016, Skytanking and Attard Services formed a joint venture in Malta, and Skytanking and Turkey's Ovenon established Skytanking Ovenon. The latter supplied aviation-fuelling personnel to oil companies at Turkish airports. Skytanking was re-awarded Munich Airport's fuel-storage and hydrant-management contract in 2017, extending a relationship that had begun in 1999. It also started into-plane operations at Malta International Airport and acquired the employees and assets of Sun Jet Services at Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Cologne. In 2018, Skytanking Ovenon took over aviation-fuelling operations associated with Petrol Ofisi Vitol at Turkish airports. The company entered Spain in 2019 through operations at Barcelona El Prat and subsequently Valencia. Reference material stated that, by November 2019, Skytanking operated at 83 airports in 14 countries and handled about 23.2 million cubic metres of aviation fuel per year. It reported approximately 1,890 employees in 2018. In April 2021, Skytanking was sold to PrimeFlight Aviation Services. Marquard & Bahls retained a minority stake in PrimeFlight, leaving it with an indirect interest in Skytanking. The transaction marked the transition of Skytanking from a major Marquard & Bahls division into the PrimeFlight group while preserving its specialization in airport fuelling and aviation-fuel infrastructure.
