Overview

Sky Movies is a group of subscription television movie channels serving the New Zealand market under the Sky brand. The service began on 18 May 1990, when Sky Television launched its original UHF subscription television operation. At launch, the channel combined a small amount of general-entertainment programming with a daily movie schedule. The non-movie programming was removed later in 1990, allowing the service to develop into a dedicated film channel. The original channel initially operated for part of the day, with movies generally scheduled from the afternoon into the evening. Its hours were progressively extended, including overnight programming during parts of the early 1990s, before it moved to a full 24-hour, seven-day schedule on 1 January 1997. In 1993, Sky Television sold the channel to HBO Asia, and it temporarily operated under the HBO name. After HBO Asia sold the service back to Sky Television, the Sky Movies name was restored. Sky Movies expanded significantly after Sky introduced its digital satellite platform. A second channel, originally called Sky MovieMax, launched in 1999. The new digital service enabled Sky to build a themed portfolio rather than rely on a single general movie channel. Over time, the portfolio included channels focused on recent releases, action, comedy, classic cinema, family films and rotating themes. The original service underwent several naming changes, including Sky Movies 1 and later Sky Movies Premiere, while the second service became Sky Movies 2, Sky Movies Extra and eventually Sky Movies Comedy. The brand also moved through successive technical and scheduling upgrades. The second channel adopted widescreen presentation from 2002, while the original channel began widescreen broadcasting on the digital platform in 2005. Sky's My Sky HDi service, introduced in 2008, made selected Sky Movies channels available in high definition to subscribers with compatible equipment and the relevant HD access option. The channels subsequently became available in high definition across the movie portfolio. Sky reorganized the line-up several times to respond to changing viewing preferences and rights arrangements. A major rebrand in November 2013 introduced names including Sky Movies Premiere, Sky Movies Extra and Sky Movies Action. A Disney-branded movie channel launched in 2015 through a partnership between Sky and The Walt Disney Company, while additional pop-up channels provided temporary programming around franchises, holidays or other themes. Later changes concentrated vintage-film programming in Sky Movies Classics, converted the former Extra channel into Sky Movies Comedy, and introduced Sky Movies Collection as a rotating thematic service. Sky Movies Collection closed in June 2024. The brand's role is therefore best understood as a changing family of premium film channels rather than a single fixed channel identity.

History

Sky Movies was introduced on 18 May 1990 as part of the initial Sky Television UHF subscription service in New Zealand. Its early schedule was not exclusively film-oriented: the channel first carried a short block of general-entertainment programmes between midday and the afternoon movie schedule. By September 1990, this material had been removed and the channel concentrated on movies. Operating hours expanded during the early 1990s, including late-night and overnight films, and the service reached 24-hour, seven-day broadcasting on 1 January 1997. The channel changed ownership during its early development. Sky Television sold it to HBO Asia in 1993, after which it operated under the HBO name. The service later returned to Sky Television ownership and adopted the Sky Movies name again. This period established the channel as a premium film outlet within Sky's New Zealand subscription business. The launch of Sky's digital satellite service in 1999 enabled the creation of a broader movie-channel family. The second channel was initially called Sky MovieMax. It later became Sky Movies 2 and, for a period from 2007 to 2013, operated as a two-hour time-shift service carrying the original channel's schedule. In 2004, the original channel was renamed Sky Movies 1, while MovieMax became Sky Movies 2. The original name returned in 2007 when Sky Movies Greats was added to the portfolio. Technology and presentation also evolved. Sky Movies 2 adopted widescreen programming from 2002. The original channel began widescreen presentation on the digital platform from 1 January 2005, although its former analogue UHF transmission continued in a standard-format presentation. Sky's My Sky HDi service, introduced in 2008, brought selected movie channels to high definition for subscribers with suitable receivers and an HD access option. The channels subsequently became HD services. Sky undertook a substantial portfolio reorganization in November 2013. The original channel became Sky Movies Premiere, the former time-shift service became Sky Movies Extra with its own programming, and Sky Movies Action was added. Other specialist services included Sky Movies Classics, which replaced the MGM Channel in 2013; Sky Movies Family, which began as a school-holiday pop-up before becoming a continuous channel in 2019; and Sky Movies Vintage, which launched in 2018 after replacing Turner Classic Movies. The portfolio also included temporary and partner-branded services. Sky Movies Pop-Up used short-term themes such as particular franchises, performers or holidays. Sky Movies Disney launched on 1 July 2015 following a Sky–Disney announcement and ended on 31 October 2019. In 2021, Sky consolidated much of its classic-film programming into Sky Movies Classics, closed Sky Movies Vintage, renamed Sky Movies Extra as Sky Movies Comedy and replaced Sky Movies Pop-Up with Sky Movies Collection. Sky Movies Collection, which carried regularly changing thematic selections, closed in June 2024. The remaining Sky Movies identity represents a flexible group of premium movie services whose channel names and schedules have been adjusted over time to match programming strategy and audience segmentation.
