Overview
Sky Calcio is the football-focused pay-TV brand of Sky Italia, the Italian subsidiary of Comcast-owned Sky. Launched on 31 July 2003 to replace TELE+ Calcio and Calcio Stream, it began as a group of dedicated football channels and a subscription package, and also operated as a pay-per-view service allowing viewers to buy individual matches or programmes. At its peak in March 2014 the Sky Calcio package had around 2.28 million subscribers, roughly half of Sky's subscriber base. The brand's channel line-up was rebranded under Sky Sport on 2 July 2018, but the Sky Calcio name was retained for the subscription package that grants access to football content. Sky Calcio has been a pioneer in Italian sports broadcasting technology: it launched an HD offer on 15 August 2009, introduced 4K HDR broadcasts from 18 August 2018 with the start of the 2018-19 Serie A season, and has offered interactive services such as Sky Sport Active, the Sky Sport app on Sky Q, and Diretta Gol, a mosaic that lets viewers watch multiple live matches simultaneously. Today Sky Calcio remains the commercial label for Sky Italia's football tier, covering Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, Premier League, Bundesliga, LaLiga, Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League, along with highlights, interviews, standings and live results. The brand is closely tied to Sky Sport's editorial operation and to the wider Sky ecosystem, including streaming via NOW and the Sky Stream and Sky Glass devices.
History
Sky Calcio was launched on 31 July 2003, replacing the previous football pay-TV offerings TELE+ Calcio and Calcio Stream. It was created as a group of channels and a subscription package dedicated to football, available on the Sky Italia platform. From the outset it also functioned as a pay-per-view service, allowing subscribers to purchase individual matches or programmes. On 15 August 2009 Sky Calcio introduced an HD offer, available to all Sky subscribers with Sky HD or My Sky HD decoders and active Sky Calcio and Sky HD packages. This marked a significant step in the adoption of high-definition sports broadcasting in Italy. By March 2014 the Sky Calcio package had approximately 2.28 million subscribers, representing about 50% of Sky's total subscriber base, underscoring its importance as a driver of subscriptions. On 2 July 2018 the Sky Calcio channels were rebranded as Sky Sport, though the Sky Calcio name was retained to identify the subscription package. From 18 August 2018, with the start of the 2018-19 Serie A season, Sky Calcio began broadcasting in 4K HDR, becoming one of the first Italian broadcasters to offer top-flight football in this format. On 10 January 2022 Sky Sport Calcio HD and Sky Sport 486 were removed from digital terrestrial television, reflecting a shift towards satellite and streaming distribution. Throughout its history Sky Calcio has offered interactive services. Sky Sport Active, accessible via the green button on Sky Box HD and My Sky HD decoders, provided highlights, schedules, standings and live matches from Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, Premier League, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference League and UEFA Youth League. On Sky Q decoders, the Sky Sport app offered similar features plus interviews, split-screen viewing of two events, and live Sky Sport 24. Diretta Gol, available on Sky Sport channels 251-259, allowed viewers to watch a mosaic of all live matches, with updates on standings and a Gol Alert replay service; it later evolved into a live switching feed during Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matchdays, and is also used for some Serie A and Premier League matchdays. Sky Calcio has also featured the 'Telecronaca del tifoso' (fan commentary) on a second audio channel for matches involving Inter, Milan, Roma and Lazio, with commentators such as Roberto Scarpini (Inter), Mauro Suma (Milan), Alessandro Spartà and Alessio Scarchilli (Roma), and Luigi Sinibaldi (Lazio). This service is now only available separately on Inter TV and Lazio Style Channel. Today Sky Calcio remains the commercial name for Sky Italia's football subscription tier, integrated into the Sky Sport brand and the broader Sky ecosystem, including streaming service NOW and devices such as Sky Stream and Sky Glass.
