Overview

SKAN AG is a Swiss company headquartered in Allschwil, near Basel, that develops, manufactures and services aseptic isolators, cleanroom technology and contamination-control systems for the pharmaceutical, biotech and life-science industries. Founded in 1968 by Peter Baumann as a trading firm for hospital and laboratory equipment, the company evolved into a vertically integrated manufacturer and today describes itself as a provider of integrated aseptic systems that deliver Grade A conditions across the entire lifecycle. Its portfolio spans isolators for sterile and toxic applications, laminar-flow workstations, mobile filter extraction units, cleanroom accessories and particle counters for air, gas and liquids. SKAN serves pharmaceutical and biotech production, quality control, hospital pharmacies, universities and research laboratories, and also finds applications in the watch and food industries. The SKAN Group is organized under SKAN Holding and includes operating companies in Switzerland (SKAN AG in Allschwil and SKAN Stein AG in Stein), the United States (SKAN US, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina), Japan (Okinawa), Germany (Görlitz), Brazil (Barueri, São Paulo), Belgium (Aseptic Technologies S.A.), France (ABC Transfer, acquired 2025) and Slovenia (Metronik, acquired 2025). The group employed more than 1,700 people as of 2022 and reported revenue of approximately CHF 361 million in 2024. SKAN operates nine locations and holds more than 80 patents worldwide. Its North American subsidiary has served the US and Canada since 2006 and operates a service network across 22 US states. SKAN's core offering is built around aseptic processing and sterility assurance. The company provides isolator systems, ebeam inline sterilization for RTU transfer, H2O2 decontamination cycles, AT-Closed Vial® filling systems, and a broad service portfolio covering design, qualification, validation, operation, modernization and retrofit. Digital services include Digital Twin simulation, CFD simulations, VR training, and on-site services such as SMEPAC containment testing, material suitability testing, cleaning strategy, microbiological requalification, H2O2 residue testing and dosimetry. The company positions itself not merely as an isolator vendor but as a provider of integrated Grade A aseptic systems that reduce risk and ensure reliable conditions over the equipment lifecycle. SKAN has a long history of innovation in aseptic technology. In the late 1990s it developed the world's first integrated H2O2 decontamination process and cycle-development methodology. It was the world market leader for isolators for fully automated processes in 2008. The company underwent a management buy-out in 1995 led by Robert Schuppli and five partners, and in 1993 refocused on its own manufactured products. More recently, SKAN has expanded through acquisitions, adding Metronik and ABC Transfer in 2025, and opened a Brazilian subsidiary in 2024. CEO Thomas Huber announced in September 2025 that he would hand over the position to Jonas Greutert at the end of the year. SKAN remains a privately held group and is a recognized employer, having been certified as a "Great Place to Work".

History

SKAN was founded in 1968 by Peter Baumann as a trading company for hospital and laboratory equipment, laminar flow systems and bioreactors imported from Scandinavia. In 1972, as Swiss exclusive partner, the company took over the microfiltration representation from Gelman Sciences Inc. and during the mid-1970s acquired various US and EU representations for Switzerland. On a smaller scale, SKAN also began developing its own products. The company imported its first isolators for the Kantonsspital Basel, where laminar flow isolator systems with integrated fully automated PES decontamination for patient treatment were put into operation in the late 1970s. In the late 1990s, SKAN developed the world's first integrated H2O2 decontamination process and cycle development methodology. Subsequently, SKAN developed further isolators and systems and expanded its business internationally for various industries. In 1993, the company realigned itself with a focus on its own manufactured products. The first were commissioned in Switzerland in 1993 and abroad from 1995. In the same year, a management buy-out took place in which Robert Schuppli and five partners took over the company; two of them later left due to age. In 2000, subsidiaries were founded in the USA, Japan and Germany. In 2008, the company was the world market leader for isolators for fully automated processes. In 2024, SKAN added a location in Brazil (SKAN do Brasil in São Paulo). In 2025, several acquisitions took place: the SKAN Group acquired the Slovenian company Metronik, a provider of digital and automated systems and solutions for the life-sciences sector, and the French company ABC Transfer, which offers Alpha Ports and Beta Bags for loading aseptic isolators. In September 2025, CEO Thomas Huber announced that he would hand over the position to Jonas Greutert at the end of the year. As of 2022, the group employed more than 1,700 people and in 2024 generated revenue of approximately CHF 361 million.
