SISV - Italian Society of Vegetation Science

The Società Italiana di Scienza della Vegetazione (SISV) is an Italian scientific association dedicated to the study of vegetation and habitats. It was established in 2006 as the successor to the Società Italiana di Fitosociologia (S.I.Fs.), which had been founded on 7 March 1964 at the Institute of Botany of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" on the proposal of Valerio Giacomini, who also served as its first President. The SISV continues the phytosociological and geobotanical tradition of its predecessor while broadening its scope to vegetation science and habitat research. The society's mission is to promote and encourage geobotanical research in general and phytosociological research in particular. It stimulates collaboration among researchers at national and international levels, cooperates with institutions involved in land management, and organizes scientific symposia, meetings, excursions, courses, and internships. It publishes the journal Vegetation Ecology and Diversity (formerly Plant Sociology, Fitosociologia, and Notiziario della Società Italiana di Fitosociologia) and manages the VegItaly vegetation database. The SISV is governed by a statute and a Presidential Council elected by the Assembly of Members, composed of the President, five councillors, and a Secretary-Treasurer. It has approximately 200 members. Membership requires an application form and sponsorship by two existing members. The society is based in Pavia, Italy, and maintains an active program of international congresses, including the 59th International Congress of the Italian Society of Vegetation Science held in Palermo in 2026.
