History
The Sir Arthur Sullivan Society is a registered charity which aims to inform the public about, and promote the performance of, the music of Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (1842-1900) and other contemporaneous British composers, by means of the presentation of publications, recordings, lectures, concerts and other activities. The Society has sponsored numerous CDs of Sullivan's works and encouraged many performances. Membership is open to all who are in sympathy with its aims, and benefits include a fully illustrated magazine three times a year and regular newsletters giving details of forthcoming performances and recordings. An annual residential weekend Festival is centred around a performance of major works by Sullivan, supported by an extensive range of recitals and talks; recent Festival venues have included Edinburgh, Portsmouth, Cirencester, Ely and Stockport. The Society has an extensive sales catalogue of CDs, booklets and libretti, many of which are unavailable elsewhere, and its library contains unique performing material, much of it available for hire. Over the years the Society has sponsored numerous recordings and performances of Sullivan's music through the generosity of various donors. Among the recent recordings sponsored by the Society are the Grammy-nominated recording of Ivanhoe, The Beauty Stone and two 2 cd sets of Sullivan's Songs issued on the Chandos label. It has also sponsored recordings of Sullivan's complete incidental music to The Tempest and Macbeth, The Light of the World, Haddon Hall and Sullivan's ballet L'Ile enchantée on the Dutton Epoch label. Future recording projects include complete recordings of The Chieftain and The Martyr of Antioch. The Sullivan Endowment Fund was established to provide a home for ongoing donations and as a growing resource for investment in new recordings, productions, performing editions, and other publishing projects.
