Simpson was an Australian manufacturing business founded in Adelaide in 1853 by Alfred M. Simpson, an immigrant from London who had arrived in South Australia four years earlier. The company began as a diversified maker of household and industrial goods rather than as a dedicated appliance specialist. Its early products included fire-resistant safes, bedsteads, japanned ware, colonial ovens and gas stoves, and the business developed a reputation for adopting machinery and production methods intended to reduce manual labour.
