Overview
Sillianer Hütte is a mountain refuge owned and operated by the Sillian section of the Österreichischer Alpenverein (Austrian Alpine Club). It sits on the Karnischer Hauptkamm (Carnic main ridge) in East Tyrol, Austria, only a few metres from the Austrian–Italian border and about 100 metres above the Füllhornsattel. The hut is the westernmost shelter on the Carnic main ridge and functions as a key base for the Karnischer Höhenweg (Carnic High Trail), the European long-distance path E10, the Southern Alps long-distance trail 03, the Via Alpina and the Peace Trail (Friedensweg). The present building opened on 31 August 1986 after a construction project that ran from 1982 to 1986, replacing the older Viktor-Hinterberger-Hütte. It was extensively renovated and expanded in 2018 to handle growing visitor numbers, and the new version reopened on 1 July 2019. The hut offers overnight accommodation, meals and drinks, and is a popular stop for hikers crossing the Carnic ridge between Austria and Italy. It is reachable on foot from Sillian, Arnbach, Sexten and via the Leckfeldalm, as well as from the Sexten and Vierschach cable-car stations. As a section hut of the Austrian Alpine Club, Sillianer Hütte is part of a network of more than 200 Alpine Club huts in Austria. It is marketed through the Sillian section's website, which also promotes the Karnischer Höhenweg and the section's bouldering room in Sillian. The hut is a commercial hospitality operation within the non-profit Alpine Club structure, with a tenant (Pächter) managing day-to-day services. Its location on the border and its role in the Peace Trail give it symbolic significance beyond its practical function as a mountain inn.
History
The history of Sillianer Hütte is closely tied to the Sillian section of the Austrian Alpine Club and its changing fortunes on the Carnic ridge. The section's first shelter was the Helmhütte, built soon after the section was founded and opened on 25 July 1891. After World War I, the Treaty of Saint-Germain shifted the border and the Helmhütte passed to Italy. The section was compensated under the 1925 Treaty of Venice. In 1930, the section bought land in Volkzein (Villgratental) and built a hut there, naming it Sillianer Hütte. Six years later, in 1936, the Sektion Austria built the Viktor-Hinterberger-Hütte on the Carnic main ridge at 2,390 metres; it opened on 16 August 1936 and was run by Sektion Austria until 1981. Wishing to return to the Carnic main ridge, the Sillian section decided at its 1981 annual general meeting to acquire the Viktor-Hinterberger-Hütte. At the same time, the original Sillianer Hütte in the Villgraten mountains was sold and renamed Volkzeiner-Hütte by its new owner. The Viktor-Hinterberger-Hütte was in very poor condition, so the board decided to build a new hut. From 1982 to 1986, construction proceeded above the old Hinterberger hut at a cost of about 7.5 million Austrian schillings (roughly 545,000 euros). The new Sillianer Hütte was ceremonially opened on 31 August 1986. The dilapidated Hinterberger hut was dismantled in 1988. In 2018, to cope with increased visitor numbers, the hut was extensively rebuilt and expanded. The new hut reopened on 1 July 2019. Today it remains the westernmost shelter on the Carnic main ridge and a key stop on the Karnischer Höhenweg, the European long-distance path E10, the Southern Alps trail 03, the Via Alpina and the Peace Trail.
