Overview
Signal Analysis Lab (SAL) is a Norwegian technology company that develops and manufactures industrial dust monitors sold under the product name Arpuro. The company provides real-time dust monitoring to smelters, quarries, factories and laboratories in Norway and several European countries. Its headquarters are in Grimstad, and its founder and managing director is Geir Kulia. The company was established on 1 August 2016, growing out of the academic environment at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU in Trondheim. Its first name was Microgrid Cybernetics, and its initial activity focused on analysing power-grid stability. In the following years it developed condition-monitoring solutions for the oil and maritime sectors. In 2019 the company moved its headquarters from Trondheim to Grimstad. In 2022 SAL was challenged by the industrial group Elkem to adapt its technology to real-time measurement of airborne particulate matter in smelters. Elkem became a pilot customer, and the company pivoted toward dust monitoring. That work became the Arpuro product line: a factory-calibrated optical dust sensor (the PM01V00LTE) combined with a live monitoring platform, alerts app and AI connector, plus field calibration, lab analysis and installation services. Arpuro Labs is described as 100% employee-owned by the engineers behind Signal Analysis Lab and focused entirely on industrial dust monitoring. Customers cited across Norway, Iceland and Spain include Elkem, Boliden, Finnfjord, Vianode, 7 Steel Nordic, Sirkel, NOAH, Norsk Spennbetong, UiA and UiS.
History
Signal Analysis Lab was established on 1 August 2016, spun out of the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU in Trondheim. Its first name was Microgrid Cybernetics, and its initial work was grid stability — analysing power-grid signals for Norwegian utilities. The company describes itself as a four-person engineering team that has been building industrial measurement systems together since 2016, founded out of NTNU with award funding from the Research Council of Norway. From 2017 the team turned its signal-processing work toward rotating machinery, building a condition-monitoring system used in Norwegian industry. In 2019 the company moved its headquarters from Trondheim to Grimstad. In 2020 the condition-monitoring business was acquired by Moreld (Karsten Moholt), and the team delivered a two-year consultancy through 2022. In 2022 the industrial group Elkem asked whether the team could measure airborne dust in real time near electric arc furnaces — something existing instruments could not do. Elkem became a pilot customer, and the company pivoted its business toward dust monitoring. That pivot produced the Arpuro product line: a factory-calibrated optical dust sensor (PM01V00LTE) combined with a live monitoring platform, an alerts app and an AI connector, supported by field calibration with gravimetric reference, accredited-lab dust composition analysis, and installation and commissioning services. Arpuro Labs is described as 100% employee-owned by the engineers behind Signal Analysis Lab and focused entirely on industrial dust monitoring. Customers cited across Norway, Iceland and Spain include Elkem, Boliden, Finnfjord, Vianode, 7 Steel Nordic, Sirkel, NOAH, Norsk Spennbetong, UiA and UiS.
