Overview

Siglo XXI de España Editores is a Spanish publishing house based in Madrid, dedicated to books that promote and develop critical thought in history, philosophy, sociology, politics and economics, as well as the human and social sciences more broadly. It was founded in 1967, two years after its sister imprint Siglo XXI Editores de México, on the initiative of Arnaldo Orfila Reynal, former director general of Fondo de Cultura Económica. A group of intellectuals and professionals including Juan Benet, José Ramón Recalde, Daniel Zarza, Pablo García Arenal, José Luis López Aranguren, Faustino Lastra, Clemente Auger, Manuel Varela, Javier Pradera, Jesús Vicente Chamorro, Pablo Serrano, Fernando Claudín and Javier Abásolo collaborated on the project. The driving idea was to renew political, sociological and historical thought in Spain, a goal made possible by lower costs from publishing and distributing within the country. The first-stage catalogue featured authors such as Julio Cortázar, Augusto Roa Bastos, Alejo Carpentier, Juan Benet, Eduardo Galeano, Fernando Claudín, Carmen Martín Gaite, Francisco Tomás y Valiente, Manuel Tuñón de Lara, Agustín García Calvo, Gonzalo Puente Ojea and Manuel Castells, as well as cartoonists like Chumy Chúmez and Quino. Foreign authors included Marta Harnecker, Roland Barthes, Tzvetan Todorov, Jacques Lacan, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Paul Ricoeur, Louis Althusser, Noam Chomsky, Jean Baudrillard, Pierre Bourdieu, Eric Hobsbawm and Michel Foucault. From the second half of the 1990s sales declined steadily. Burdened by debts to authors and suppliers, an oversized fixed-cost structure and some spectacular commercial failures, management proposed a redundancy plan in 1993 that did not initially succeed. Four years later, Faustino Lastra, who had returned to head the company in place of Javier Abásolo, obtained labour authority approval for the restructuring. The board then decided to divest the distributor, sold the head-office building and laid off most of the staff, leaving a minimal editorial team. In 2010 the company was acquired by Ediciones Akal and integrated into the Akal publishing group alongside Istmo, Foca and H. Blume. Today Siglo XXI de España Editores continues to publish works in the humanities and critical thought. Its catalogue is particularly strong in history, including the renowned 37-volume «Historia Universal Siglo XXI», and also covers social sciences, philosophy, linguistics, anthropology, psychology and economics, with more modest attention to education, urbanism, arts, social action, science and technology. Signature authors have their own sections, such as the «Biblioteca Eduardo Galeano» and «Biblioteca Gonzalo Puente Ojea», while other thinkers appear in collections like «El hombre y sus obras», «Biografías», «Voces del Este» and «Filósofos en 90 minutos». The publisher is headquartered at Calle Recaredo, 3, 28002 Madrid, and maintains an online catalogue with new releases, ebooks, author information and news.
